Subject description: A one-stop quick reference to all of the DIY sites we can think of
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hello all,

There's a links section in electro-music, but sometimes it's nice to have a "quick reference" kind of thing right there where you're perusing. So, I thought I'd sticky this at the top of the DIY page as a work in progress. Basically, it will be just a link with a name - little to no description. Those of us who've been in Synth DIY for a while pretty much know who is who, and anybody new to it should click through one by one to find out who is who Very Happy

Please add your links to this thread, and I'll transfer them to this list in the first message in the thread. Don't forget to put a more detailed link in the lins section as well!

The qualification for this list is that the site is about synth diy - it can include kit suppliers and things like that as well, as long as they are synthesizer oriented. Effects are OK as well. Because this is meant as a DIY Site quick reference, please continue to put parts suppliers, etc. in the links section here:

electro-music DIY links

If you need any corrections or preferences to the name, let me know (like I have to figure out how to put the umlaut in JH's name, and the accent in Rene's name). Soon this text will disappear as it becomes obvious what this sticky is all about, and only the links will appear in this first message. I have many more, but here's the first smattering:

Thank you, mighty ALE Very Happy

I just found myself going through or searching for links to sites I *knew* existed, which I usually do by searching author ("AndrewF" or "Frijitz", for example). All I needed was a name, so I thought something like this would help me Laughing

http://www.strings.ph.qmw.ac.uk/~thomas/synthdiy/
http://www.ucapps.de/
http://www.milton.arachsys.com/nj71/
http://search.retrosynth.com/synth-diy/
The last is very useful as a resource. Surprising how often the answer can be in there Smile

I couldn't find Aaron Cram's Apache project - it had some great
circuits and ideas though. Anyone know where Aaron is?

P.S. apologies if this post comes through more than once. Power cuts here....

Okee doke. Added them as:

uCApps.de
Steve Thomas Synthesizer Construction Pages
Neil Johnson "Neil's Webbly World"
Synth DIY List Search Page

Let me know if I screwed up any of the titles/names.

Yer right - I always enjoyed Aron Cram's site - dunno if it's still there or not.

Cheers,
Scott

Hi,

Magnus's Buchla Schematic link is broken. (Doubled up the http:)

But even fixing that doesn't work. On SDIY somebody recently posted that he has a "new" site; I went there and was pleased to find that many of the schematic links work, which come up dead at his old site(which the search engines I use seem to favor!)

Then I didn't save it properly and now can't find the SDIY post telling of the "new" site Sad So I'd love to see that one added!)

I noticed Aaron's Apache site was unavailable recently too. Worked a couple weeks ago?

BTW, How about adding a "MIDIbox" to the ucapps.de link
(I know I look for midibox, not uCApps?)

Maybe add the name of individuals to their sites? For example, Scott Juskiw to Tellun and Mark Bareille to Papareil?

Is it worth double listing for people who know them one way but not the other?

IOW:
Scott Juskiw-Tellun Corp
and
Tellen Corp-Scott Juskiw
would
both appear in the list?

Scott Stites-Birth of a Synth(old site)
Birth of a Synth-Scott Stites(old site)

etc.

Randal

Thanks, I added Scott's name to Tellun and fixed the magnus links.

Once is fine by me - people generally know what they're looking for. If not, the links page should bear that kind of information. This is just the Rolodex Very Happy .

I'll spiff it up as time allows.

Cheerios,

Scott

Scott
I edited your first post here, changing the "electro-music DIY links" from http://electro-music.com/forum/links.php to http://electro-music.com/forum/links.php?id=28
I also created a "featured link" on the appropriate Links section pointing at this thread Exclamation
hope you don't mind

It's a great Blog and well suited for the Rolodex Very Happy . In fact, a few of these other suggestions I've gotten I'd never run across, and some I haven't looked at in years, so this is a fun/informative project to undertake.

There are a zillion more out there - I know; I've seen them. As I remember them (or am reminded), they'll go in the list.

Aaron Cram's stuff seems to be lost Crying or Very sad

I've taken to highlighting the IDs of electro-music members that are associated with these sites, where applicable. If there are some I'm unaware of, please let me know. Same goes for anything "broken" here.

Cheers,
Scott

I noticed some undefinable strangeness on the links and then had a look at the HTML .. only then I realized you had highlighted the forum members  I was about to suggest a different color, but then again, once it's known it's clear.

Re. the ü è ê é ç stuff, it's easiest probably to install a US international keyboard (assuming you are using windows). That one turns some characters like ~ ` ' " ^ into dead-key modifiers. When you type the modifier and then a character that can be modified it will be modified and otherwise the next key press will just type both keys pressed in sequence. When however you don't regularly use this feature it might be a bit annoying, or take some time to get used to. This keyboard can be set through the "Regional and lnaguage options" in the "control panel".

Another option, again assuming windows, is to use the "character map" utility which normally can be found in "Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools". This is more work, but the keyboard's functioning doesn't change.

Yet another option, for windows again, would be to use the ALT numpad key codes as in ALT130 for é, but you'd want to find a table for that. It works by pressing and holding ALT then typing the digits on the numeric keypad then releasing ALT.

Ah! Thanks, Jan. Got the accent on René. Now I'll see if I can do Juergen's name justice.

Edit: Jürgen, right?

I keep timing out on http://burnit.co.uk/sdiy/ but I know I've been there before. I'll try it again, when I make a connection (to be sure) I'll put it up.

That's Seb Francis' site, right? Or do I have my wires crossed?

Cheers,
Scott

it is indeed. FWIW, I just went on it for 4 or 5 minutes using safari on an old G4 with 1meg broadband, and had no problems...

Dave - yep, I got through just now, too.

Seraph - absolutely. IMO, circuit bending (and FX) are part of Synth DIY - For those that don't feel that way, I've been sort of delineating the sites slightly by putting "FX" or "Circuit Bending" in the link. But, for heaven's sake, don't bypass R.G. Keen's GEOFex because it's an "effects" site.

Cheers,
Scott
