Subject description: Trying to figure out these two sounds...

The attached mp3 has two brief synth solos in it. They both sound like simple patches, and the playing style is fairly minimal. I'm impressed at how expressive they are, with just a few monophonic notes and the mod wheel. And I can't seem to figure them out.

#1 sounds like a patch I downloaded from here recently that uses the VOSIM technique. I have only just started poking around with VOSIM. But what is happening when he throws the mod wheel and gets that screaming sound? What is being modulated? It sounds like a filter sweep, but somehow not like a regular filter. The sound seems to maintain its character while also having a sense of motion. Maybe like the whole formant is moving down the spectrum?

#2 sounds like a sawtooth as the basic sound. I hear a low-pass filter with the frequency being modulated by a LFO, and some kind of "notchy" thing over it that has its own LFO. What is that notchy thing? A very slow square wave? It sounds like he is modulating the speed of both LFOs with the modwheel. I love this sound! It's like a robot peeling off a scab. Any ideas how to patch it?

The first clip is from a song called "Desperate Guys" and the second is from "Phone Call," both by an American group named The Faint. It's copyrighted material that I don't own the copyright to, but I think the clip is so short that this falls under fair use.

In #2 I hear no lowpass filter, i do hear a phaser and a very large down going pitchbend, it almost stops the oscillator completely, leaving spikes for the phaser to work on.

I like this sound very much!
