I've been experimenting with modal synthesis. It's the technique Tassman uses to create those struck-object sounds: a bank of tuned highly-resonant bandpass filters which are excited by an impulse. Each bandpass filter is a 'mode', and has a frequency, an initial amplitude, and a decay time.

I've loaded an ensemble called Ringer into the Reaktor User Library which does this. It can be found at http://www.native-instruments.com/forums.html?id=userlibrary&type=0&ulbr=1&plview=detail&patchid=7071 for anyone who's interested.
