Dear all,

Looks like Stanford University kindly posted one of my chuck talks in 2007, presented at Stanford Computer Science in the PCD + HCI seminar series:

Enjoy (and/or beware)!

Best,
Ge!

Cool. 20 minutes in now, looks like a video version of your book. Lovely.

i watched the whole thing monday evening. The next day i installed it.

I've been using max/msp for some several years now and am getting sick of having to connect objects with patch cords over and over again, the lack of scoped sends, the horrible data structures. A computer music environment designed by a computer scientist is very attractive.

I might point out that ChucK is not the only computer music (programming) environment designed by a computer scientist - http://supercollider.sourceforge.net Razz

This is not to diminish Ge's accomplishment in any way -- but, I believe in choosing the right tool for the right reasons. Supercollider and ChucK do many of the same things but their strengths don't overlap completely -- ChucK is really good at some things that are harder in supercollider and vice versa (some things which I take for granted as being really easy in supercollider I suspect would be quite a bit more convoluted in ChucK).

I would say, check them out, ask some questions about their strengths and weaknesses, and then make a decision based on your needs. Don't use ChucK only because you saw a (very cool and fantastic) video, and don't use supercollider because I happen to like it. Use one or the other (or both) depending on the task at hand and which is the right tool for the job.

James

PS I tried Max once upon a time, hated it. Congrats on escaping from patch cord land!
