Argh! I think I've broken my A-156 Quantizer! |
 |
|
So I bought a Doepfer A-156 Quantizer to go in my DIY +/-15v system (Doefper said it's fine to run it on 15 volt rails).
The cable it came with wasn't long enough so I made a new one and, managed to get the power the wrong way round. Turned on the modular and heard two capacitors go pop and saw the magic smoke.
I looked at the board and notices the TL062 opamp had a crack through it so I replaced it with a TL072 (that's all I had) and replaced all the electrolytics.
I now turn it on (with the power the correct way) and I'm not entirely sure it's working properly. Can someone tell me if this sounds right?
The pulse out of my CGS Utility LFO feeds the clock of my Buchla 208 Random Voltage Generator and the trigger in of the A-156. The 208 feeds the CV in of the A-156 and the CV out feeds the VCO. This should mean that the A-156 quantizers at the same speed as the 208 generates random CVs. Correct? This appears to work.
However I also do the following to try and get an arpeggiated sound:
The pulse out of my CGS Utility LFO feeds the trigger in of the A-156 Quantizer. The ramp out of the same CGS Utility LFO feeds the CV in of my A-156 and the CV out feeds the VCO. Can someone confirm that this will give me an arpeggiated scale through 5 octaves?.
What I get is a high pitched whine coming from the VCO. I measure the output of the A-156 and it seems to hold at a steady 4.89v. This happens on both quantizer sections on the A-156.
Am I doing something wrong, or have I fried my A-156? I just don't know if I'm using it wrong because I've never used or owned a quantizer before.
Thanks very much for your help! |

so you trigger the quantizer at the same speed as the ramp is? then you will always get the same voltage for each cycle.
try the quantizer without the trigger to see if it works (the A-156 does not necessarily need an external trigger).
BTW the LFO's output is bipolar, the A-156 wil only process positive votlages. _________________

Thanks for the reply!
I just tried it and it still just sounds like I'm getting roughly 5v out the outputs.
Even with nothing plugged into the inputs I get 5v from the outputs. I've got a bad feeling I've broken it already! |

Also, when I put a pulse from the CGS Utility LFO into the Trigger In, I get nothing from the Trigger Out.
Does it look like it's fried? |

I think I've worked out why it does work with a 208 and not with a Utility LFO. One thing I forgot to mention was that it doesn't completely with the 208. The VCO changes pitch but it sounds like there's a DC offset coming from the A-156 (probably 5V).
The 208 outputs 0-10V whereas the LFO is less than that, isn't it (I can't remember off hand)? The A-156 only seems to change the output CV when the input CV is more that 5V.
The Doepfer dealer I bought it from suggested swapping out the 5V voltage reg. I've tried that but it still doesn't work! |

that's a bummer.
maybe they would provide you with a new programmed PIC?
maybe i could take a look at my unit on monday to get an overview on the parts involved... _________________
