Open Port Night! (Open Port Live!) Subject description: NEW! Check out Chat to see if anyone is doing original, live streaming on the public port! |
 |
|
17 April 2010 (Saturday) Update:
A number of people have expressed interest in participating in another Open Port Live Night and tonight (Saturday 17 April) looks like a great night for it. Check the radio page for starting time. Participants "step up to the mike" by logging into the public port with streaming software to do their live set. Performers who have used the public port can help get you set up with the details in chat. We coordinate the schedule in chat as well. If you want to participate, stop into chat!!!
4 April 2010 Update:
Over the past couple of days, e-musicians have been using the public port to do live, original electronic music. Stop into the chat room to see if anyone is streaming on the Open Port.
2 April 2010 Update:
Roughly 5 hours after it started, Open Port Live! ended. Thanks to all the performers who stepped up to open port to stream live, original music!! Thanks to those who listened to the live streamcast. For those who missed it, look below for any recordings that might be posted. And a special thanks to mosc for having this wonderful place to all of us to gather and enjoy electro-music(and for an amazing performance as well!).
ORIGINAL POST:
I had an idea at work today: Could we have an Open Port Night much like an Open Mike Night--something for people like me (and others) who cannot for whatever reason do an hour or half hour show on a regular basis but who would be willing to do 10, 15, 20 minutes or so on an evening when there is no live programming on main?
People in chat were very supportive and pointed out that the perfect place is the public port which can support up to 32 listeners at a time.*
So, I gave it a test run. It worked!! Since no one knew I was streaming to the public port (and no one was listening), I did it again. This time there were listeners. And before I knew it, others were streaming! radio.electro-music's first Open Port Night was on the air!
If streamers like what they did and want to share it, they can upload it here.**
So that's the basic idea. I had fun playing and listening. I hope others will step up to the port* to stream some live, original music--whether its for 10, 15, 20 minutes or so as their schedules and interests permit. Low pressure performing!!

That sounds really cool! Maybe if this is going on someone could do a notifying post on the forums? I'm kind of bad at hanging around in the chat, but I check up on the forums all the time - maybe others do similarly.

Thanks to jfox for recording the improv pieces. I look forward to listening to them again. This could be the start of an archives for what might be used sometime for a "Best of Open Port Live!" as more e-musicians take to the Open Port.
As for this Friday, 4/2/10, so far things look good. EdisonRex, who had been doing a two-hour live set--Edison's Ephemera--every Friday but who has gone to an alternate weeks schedule, has graciously given the green light to do an "Open Port Live!" show on the main stream this Friday as it is one of the "off weeks." (Thank you, EdisonRex!!! Thanks, also, to BlueHell for suggesting "Open Port Live!" could be streamed on the main port!!!)
Hopefully, with advanced notice more people will join in for some live streaming and live listening. More details to follow.

Grzmfmble!
We have to do our grocery shopping today, which means I'm going to miss out. Argh!
I'm keeping an eye out for the next one. Who knows, I might jump in, too. |

Had a great time doing this and think this is wonderfully social and musical event. I think this will become more popular with many EM musicians "stepping up to the port".
Most of this set was done with the "Benjolin" pictured below. It;s not pretty but it sure sounds cool
Here is my 1/2 hour set from this evening.

I had a lot of fun playing and listening to everyone on this first scheduled Open port Night! The Benjolin really stood out for me because of its distinctive sound
Thanks to everyone who participated! (playing or listening)

Thanks PHOBoS ! Just downloaded your sets as well as all the others.
I now Audiodef had a question about the Benjolin. If anyone is interested just take a peek here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-185.html
Rob is an exceptionally brilliant man and this design is proof of his ability. I am constantly amazed at all the terrific talent we have on this forum !
Happy Easter to those who celebrate. Otherwise, just have a pleasant weekend
Thanks again Steve for the great idea and thanks to Jan of course for his work.

Here's the piece I did to fill-in while one of the performers was working to correct some technical problems. (Its pure improv, warts and all; so please ignore my "wrong notes.")
Technical notes: laid back beats, midi sync clock, and a few assorted sounds were from the E-Mu Proteus 2500, babbling brook and clock-synced retriggered samples were from an E-Mu P2K-based box (thanks for the sound design ideas, Rob!), ambient pads/drones/etc. were from a Roland M-GS64 with support from a Casio VZ-8m patch (all triggered from a usb keyboard routed through SONAR), flute/recorder sounds were from a Casio CZ-1 --> Alesis Midverb.
At the end, I did a short (8 min.) closing. It brings back some material from my NYE 2009-2010 set with some new stuff. Thought I'd post that here.

Saturday night 17th of April 2010
Orchard Set ... testing some synth riffs for a new track ...
Using RM1X to clock 2 MFOS 16 step seqencers & the KLEE sequencer , 4 vco's, each with square dividers / lockhart wavefolders & saw animators to fatten up the sound, 4 vcf's , 4 vca's (modular patched for 4 seperate fat monosynths).
Also my Super Soundlab ++ , weird sound generator , Paia Fatman , ASM-2 , Novation super bass station , Waldorf pulse & Roland Juno 106 all running live from the RM1X , everything into a 24 ch desk, then through a TL Audio Valve compressor (+4dB) and sent to edcast & the internet.
Had great fun controlling 9 monosynths & 1 polysynth,
Dave

Another Open Port Success!
This time I did something experimental using 2 DIY devices. One converts light into sound, the other one converts electromagnetic waves into sound. Light sources I used incl: Mad Scientist light, Fluorescent light, TV & DVD remote controllers, RGB LED PAR (DMX controlled) and a PC monitor. EMW sources I used incl: Laptop, PWM controlled fan (you can hear it about 5 min. into the set), mini Van De Graaff Generator (screaming/screeching noise), powerswitch on my delay, and some other sources. To make the sounds a bit more interesting I added delay.
I also streamed video but I couldn't record that (maybe i'll do that sometime in the future).
I had a lot of fun playing and listening and the Jam was great!
Thanks to Dr Steve, Blue_Hell, Antimon, Mohoyoho, Dave, jfox, wmonk & Shane for playing. and everyone who listened.
