Hi there. This is my first post.

I just bought a second-hand Lead 3 and wants to know if it's normal that the mod wheel is loose from left to right. It doesn't touch any case border, but still moves from left to right by about 2-3 mm.

The mod wheel works perfectly fine, by the way. I'm just worried that something mechanical might be loose inside.

Thank you!

The reason is rather vague...
My NordLead2 is doing this over 12 years now. It is a little from right to the left and also up and down.
I can live with it.

Wout

Thanks for the reply.

I did open the Lead 3 and found that the mod wheel axis is directly a 10k pot axis. A simple screw ties the wheel to the axis. It is this axis that is loose within the pot, making the wheel loose itself from left to right. Honestly, I don't understand why Clavia didn't make the axis supported at both ends. This would solve the issue because the axis not going up and down, the mod wheel wouldn't go left and right.

This also means if you press too hard on the mod wheel, it's simply going to break the pot axis. With a doubly-supported axis, it would be much harder to break.

Anyway, at least now I know that if something really breaks, it's cheap to replace. Simply buy a good quality 10k pot with a half-inch axis and clamp the mod wheel to it. This is why I love hand-made instruments.

Have a good day,

At the other hand as long as I supported the NordLead (and other Clavia synths with ModWheels) I never read about a broken axis nor Wheel. Loose cables, yes, but no broken pots.
The other ones on the Panel: yes, and they were replaced, but never the Wheel...
