A combination of soaring artificial vocalisms and bizarre physically-modelled accompaniment and drums, Transcension explores the territory of flying over vast sonic spaces...

Or something...

Wink

This song uses a characteristic of monophonic physically-modelled instruments, that of the portamento jump producing a sharp funky little explosion. Combined with AgnusDeiWave FS1R vocalisms and some soaring drumming... this is bright but mournfull dark ambient.

Nice track, Jeff. Thanks for posting it. Can you explain what " AgnusDeiWave FS1R vocalisms" are, or point my browser in the right direction?

While listening I went to your web site, http://www.parnasse.com/jeff.htm

I think I'll spend the next few days over there. Smile

Thanks Howard!

AgnusDeiWave was another piece I did using my FS1R and its 'formant sequences'. The FS1R as you may know, was Yamaha's last FM synth and they added something very special to it, formant synthesis. When I'd heard that a Dutch gentleman had written software which would take Praat (the famous vocal analysis software) formant sequences and turn them into FS1R formant sequences, I got one. AgnusDeiWave used a 3 second sample of a renaissance choral group singining Obrecht's Agnus Dei from one of his masses.

A formant sequence, in this regard is a set of 8 time-based tracks, each one with separate pitch and formant strength. This synthesizer can talk!

My piece, A Moist Mirage also uses formant sequences, FWIW...

Here's two experiments I did, both using Simpson's samples... Wink

Mr. Burns - "Damn it Smithers, this isn't rocket science it's brain surgery"
http://parnasse.com/temp/DamnItfs1r.mp3

Homer - "Shut uuuuup"
http://parnasse.com/temp/ShutUpfs1r.mp3

Remember, the FS1R does not use samples, it is a pure, FM synthesizer with some amazing realtime filter banks which allow it to do formant synthesis. Those are not samples, but instead a sequence of formants. You can slow them or speed down the sequences too.

In each example I created a formant sequence and uploaded via MIDI to my FS1R and then improvised a bit with it. As you can see, it translates the formants, so that the sound is still recognizable as the pitch changes.

Very Happy

You can get these amazing synths for about $400-450 these days on eBay. That's what I paid for mine!

I'm familiar with format synthesis. I have a Kyma system which is very rich in those features. I've not experimented with it, but your stuff is motivational. Smile

I'm in the middle of a bunch of software upgrades on the server, but then I think I'll see what that technique can do.

Your post is much appreciated.
I think I'll create a new forum for posting links to mp3s and such.

I just did!
