With all due respect; if you don't know what components you need there will be very little advantage in building a custom PC on your own.
What I'd do in that case is ask somebody more knowledgable to pick components and build it for you in exchange for a bottle of something good.
There are just too many factors to considder and they depend on factors like what your budget is and what applications you use.
At the least you'll need;
Case&power suply (special low-noise models are available... but more expensive).
Mother board (loads of things depend on this).
CPU.
Memory.
Hard-disk(s).
Soundcard.
CD/DVD reader/burner.
Operating System.
Music Software.
A video card and a network card may or may not be on the motherboard and if they are those may or may not be good enough for you. Network cards can sometimes be left out entirerly which makes registering software a chore but it does take a few drivers out of your system load (and makes it easier to keep it virus-free). Some mother boards come with sound cards build-in. Those aren't good enough (unless it's a Amiga) and need to be disabled.
Then come questions like extra USB or firewire for controlers, external hard-drives and maybe your soundcard. Maybe you will want scsi for older samplers and a oldfashioned floppy drive might be needed for yet older samplers. A card reader can't hurt either.
Worse yet, the whole thing will need to be configured which basically means ripping whole chunks of the OS out because they don't do anything usefull. This can make a pc blazing fast or render it inoperable, depending on your skill/experience.
Or you could just get a Mac which eleminates a lot of the choices (good) but also a fair amount of options (might be bad) and which will cost significantly more (probably bad). It als makes you have to deal with OSX which could also be good or bad.
Or you could just get some reasonable-looking of the shelf system and put in a prosumer sound card and be done with it.
Or you could go to one of those companies that does all of this for you, configures it and sell it complete with your music software. That would probably work quite well but it will cost you. _________________ Kassen |
