If you ever have a problem accessing your files or getting an access denied message, this may help.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

One thing to notice is that they say to turn of simple file sharing which is enabled by Microsoft by default. If you don't disable simple sharing, the change ownership things don't work. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/ which is referenced in the abovementioned link.

But when you do have simple file sharing on (on XP pro) you can still right click on a folder, select properties, go to the sharing tab and check make this folder private. You'll need administrative credentials (as wel)l then.

Anyway, thats what I did recently in order to be able to remove some disturbing junk left over from a half controlled session with a partition manager (gues I was lucky there).

Actually, turning any common type of filesharing on when you are using your computer as a workstation will often create privs "problems. This can be experienced on macs as well. These problems are in most cases very logical. Some decent FTP servers will however be more transparent.

The only thing logical I find about it is that the file system lost communication somewhere along the line and left the file locked up thinking it's still in use.

I've used NFS for file sharing for years with thousands of computers cross-sharing stuff and never had any problems like this.

I understand why Elektro80 says it's logical to have these problems. Thats because with NFS you require that all computers use the same user and group ids across the network. Windows and OSX don't do that because they have to be friendly and easy to use. If I bothered set up a Windows Directory Server here, I probably wouldn't have this particular problem.

Now that I know how to fix it, it's not such a big deal. Sometimes when you copy files from a USB storage device you can get in these same binds, especially if the device is a camera.

Yes to the first and well.. on OS X you can and should implement Open Directory schemes that handle users and permissions across the network. I do that at work and I do that at home.

I was a victim of this a few days ago.
I wanted to copy My Documents from the drive in my dead laptop, to my desktop machine.

I had connected the laptop drive through a USB->ATA adapter, and connected it to the desktop machine.

I could not even look at the My Documents folder on the laptop drive, without disabling Simple File Sharing. I also had to change the owner and permissions for all the files/dirs/subdirs under MyDocuments, in order to copy these to my desktop system.

I then copied the folder from the laptop drive to my desktop drive.
During the copy process, "Access Denied" was displayed on certain files. I had to delete the directory where these files existed, in order to complete the copy process. I could not delete the file which caused the "Access Denied" message to be displayed, unless I deleted the directory it was in.

This does not make sense to me.

I had to repeat these steps about 8 times, even though I have admin rights on the desktop system.

If anyone has an explanation for this, it would be helpful.

Thanks, but I think that's the same support page that Howard referenced in the original post.

And to think we had to pay money for XP we could have used for more gear Wink

Nope it's not the same, it's similar though. Too bad you are not a true fan of this kind of literature, I could point you to a few more .. in fact I must have a few CDs full of that shit somewhere, oh wait they're in the xmas tree Very Happy

About money, well yes, but for a new pc it's not that much really, the rip off comes when you've bought a new pc with let's say a dutch version of the xp home edition pre installed and then conclude that what you really need is an american or brittish version of xp pro ... yes sir, is of course possible sir, is going to cost you 400 € Shocked

That's plain theft IMHO.

But you managed to get all your files back I hope ?

Do you mean the MSDN or KnowledgeBase?
Well, I've got a full set of MSDN CD's and pulled out most of my hair as a result.
And here I thought that since I have Admin privileges, I could do anything

I sure did, but I'm still looking to find out why I had the issues I posted.
I will start by reading your KB article, then go further
