Hi everyone, im new here so hopefully im posting this in the right forum...

Im still fairly new to this way of making music so please bear that in mind.
Before i ask any questions i'll just give a little background info.

At the moment i'm mainly using my laptop to play synths on Reason ( with 2 midi keyboards) although i imagine i'll start to use my laptop for more things (recording etc) as time goes on. At the moment i'm just using the soundcard i got with the laptop and using the headphone out into the mixing desk and then into the P.A.

I was planning on getting a soundcard, then i read about midi/audio interfaces in a post on this forum. Is it a case of just needing one or the other? From what ive read and understood so far im favouring an audio interface over getting a new soundcard.

Something like this one ...

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire410-focus.html

Any suggestions or advice on anything ive mentioned would be great thanks.

welcome

The FW410 is absolutely OK, but I reckon there might be newer stuff out there which is marginally better.

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. If i get an audio interface is it not necessary to buy a new soundcard ?

Hi again, i was just wondering if my lack of knowledge has made my question a little confusing. Embarassed

I realise that a soundcard and the M-audio are both audio interfaces but im wondering if its a choice between a sound card (type 1) and the FW410 (type 2) ? Or do i really need both ? Thanks again.

I think you may have either one or both at the same time.

If you're using the fw410 for audio production, the quality of the pc's internal soundcard doesn't matter.

You can have both, but you'll use only one for audio work. (Unless you don't mind some of your tracks being routed through an inferior device. Confused )

James

you don't have to take it out, you'll simply select the one you want to use.

I have M-audio Audiophile FW and I've had a lot of problems with it. The control panel crashes often and I get sound stuttering even in basic mp3 playing. I cannot recommend this interface to anyone. I use Asus P3 3,2ghz laptop with windows xp sp2.
