Subject description: film, carbon 1% 2%? Whats the diff?

I am assembling my 2nd sound lab. Ive been happily soldering in resisters all evening when it occured to me "HAY! These are ALL 1%, when the recipe calls for 5%, AND these are all metal film resisters when the recipe calls for carbon (Or doesnt say which)"

SO, my question is: How much does this matter? 1% is MORE 'accurate' then 5% right? Metal film and carbon film are functionally the same, right? 220K is 220K whether its carbon or metal, right?

Please dont tell me I need to unsolder all of these resistors!

You are okay

there was a time when 1% resistors were a lot more expensive than 5%, so they were specified only when necessary. These days the price difference isn't so much so some people just use 1% metal everywhere.

The % just indicates how close to specification the resistor should be
say a 1% 100K should be between 99k-101k
a 5% - 95k-105k

There are only a few ccts where you need the resistance to be exactly as spec'd

however, be aware that some 1%'ers have 4 color bands that indicate value: the first three a 3 digit value [4.99 for example] and then the multiplier.

so, a common value like 5.6k would read green, blue, black, brown [5.60].. instead of green, blue, red....

Thanks.

I figured that out, and was using the handy-dandy resistor tool on the musicfromouterspace page.

But since my parts from Mouser got here in lightening speed, I had everything all sorted in little plastic baggies and labeled.

Its kinda funny: The plastic bags cost them more then the parts cost!

A little zip lock baggie with TWO resisters in it is kind of funny.

I almost feel like I ripped them off!

Some stuff was back-ordered, but I am sure it will be here soon.

I ordered late thursday night, and the stuff showed up monday morning!

Conrad (over here in Europe) once sent me a single bag of resistors like this, and didn't even charge shipping...

one difference is the power those resistors can handle. Metal usually 0.25W, carbon 0,6W.
Normally in opamp circuits this doesn´t matter, but there may be situations where one has to wath out.

actually not! today metal film resistors are sold as 1/4W but if you take a look at the datasheets you will see that they are actually capable of 0,6W; at least the ones i buy (Reichelt, Conrad). in older times they where all 1/4W. the labeling is only tradition nowadays.
