I am writing a CD review for school and am trying to define the unmistakable sound of electro.

Electro, i have always thought, is a genre of electronic music: stripped back with percussive sound effects... i need help describing it, maybe you can help Very Happy

I've got a week till it's due and would appreciate any feedback + get a kick out of chatting about this and other stuff eg. i just got a mac g4 with pro-tools, reason & live and am just getting my head around it all and studying contempory music - technical production. The teachers are great but unfortunately, being older than myself haven't been exposed to much 'interesting' electronic music it seems. I can't blame them for not finding much in todays charting hip hop but thus find little alternative to rock & roll.

Being a bit of a music slut i dig this too but what about ... .........

I popped a reply up on the "introduce yourself" forum. Might not be terribly helpful.

electro ia a term that has many meanings...

currently electro refers to a genre that is characterized by vintage drum machine rythms, sparse vintage synth arps and sometimes vocals[deadpanned almost robot like]...ths genre is sometimes called 'electroclash'..examples currently would be 'Peaches'.. 'Fischerspooner'

It can also refer to the electronic music of the mid-80's to early 90's..'electro-funk'....breakdancing music was born from this genre...lots of 808 beats...

however, there is a larger scope to the meaning of the word electro...

basically meaning- any electronic music..

i think mosc can elaborate on that more

I would define "electro" as robotic music, utilising vocoders, percussive beats....very "machine-like" or "robotic"......like some of the very early Kraftwerk......

Also, Meat Beat Manifesto had a song called "I am electro" that had a metallic voice, mechanised percussion, etc.

It's kind of hard to put "labels" or "catagories" on electronic music......there are soooooo many that oft-times a piece will fit into SEVERAL.

For example, "EMB" ("Electronic Body Music") now refers to most European E-music, but, originally, it meant that electrodes were attached to the performer's body, and their skin resistance (GSR) as they moved around, caused the pitch, volume, filtering, etc to change.

In a sense, the theremin is "WIRELESS EBM"!
