Hi!

just I've been a lurker here in E and I finally have a question:

someone gave an "old" IBOOK CLAMSHELL (the very first colorful models, remember those?)

it is in very good shape,300 MHz,64 MB in RAM and 5GB in HD (Very Happy)

I'd like to use it as a sound generator, not much for sound recording and eventually simple sound processing... is this possible?

I'd like to find some software (a la audiomulch or such) capable of generating soundscapes, drones and stuff like that and leave the sound processing and sequencing to more up to date stuff.

Andy tips and shared wisdom are very very welcome!

There is no point in installing OS X on that particular model if you want to mess with audio. OS9 is what you want! Very Happy

Try Supercollider http://www.audiosynth.com/

You want this one.

Enjoy!

There are other stuff too, but Supercolllider is a good start.

SC will keep you occupied until retirement. Cool

There were a lot of weird stuff for OS9. I guess most of it is still around.
There was something called The Nirvana Engine which was a kind of audio/video/midi synth thingie with a quasi-fractal engine. It would run OK on the clamshell.

Many of the frist generation softsynths for OS9 will run well on the iBook. Even the NI B4 will probably be playable.

Yup. Cellsynth is another. Its sound engine is really good too.

You can also run Logic 7.3 on the Clamshell. But I'd get a bigger HD (and more RAM) if I were you Shocked

When you consider that the early Mouse on Mars and Microstoria LP's were recorded using PB 3400's, it makes one wonder Idea

that's the idea...

why do we need the lates and fastest gadget to make music? making music with this clamshell it's like proving to myself I can still make good stuff with more rudimentary tools!

the immediate drawback is that with less CPU speed, you use less plug-ins. The marvelous thing about OS9 though was that you could still have many audio tracks. That was just dependent on the size (and speed) of your HD.

But yes, you're right. We don't need the latest and greatest to produce good music. I always use the Lee Scratch Perry yardstick. Now he produced great music on a four track (come to think of it, Sergent Pepper's was produced on a four track too Very Happy ).

For OS9, you need to look for an old copy of SuperCollider 2 floating around somewhere. The current version, SuperCollider Server or (unofficially) SuperCollider 3, is Mac OSX only.

Oh wait, that was easy, sc2 is at http://www.audiosynth.com/files/SC2.2.16.sea.hqx

Smile

Enjoy!

James

I too am in this situation. I am trading some old speakers for a friends tibook 400mhz (or 500 im not sure) for the sole purpose of editing my 2 micromodulars, but then i thought about old os9 apps and the like......

I arrived at mac audio at OSX..... so i have no idea how to set up OMS, drivers etc etc. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be unreal.

For a start, there is NO OMS in OSX! (hoorah!- although to be honest, it always worked very well for me).

My last book was a 500Ti. I wouldn't have sold it if I hadn't have been given this MBP. It was a superb machine- and built a lot better than this one too!

In 'Utilities' in OSX, is the audio/midi set up section. plug in an mt4 or whatever, then go from there. If you've used Nords, it's pretty easy.

If you can find The Nirvana Engine then you will have something seriously cool on your hands. It can generate midi from live video feeds and more.
It also generates fractal video stuff from audio. And more.

I think it was made by some japanese artist. I also think the application was on a runtime CD thingie.. but could possibly also be run from a mounted CD image.
