Real seeks digital music alliance with Apple
April 15, 2004 - 00:40 EDT   In an e-mail sent to Apple CEO Steve Jobs last week, RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser suggested that the two companies form a "tactical alliance" against Microsoft in the digital music business. But if an alliance with Apple could not be struck, Glaser hinted that he might form a partnership with Microsoft to pursue "very interesting opportunities," according to the New York Times. Glaser reportedly asked Jobs to consider licensing Apple's Fairplay digital rights management technolog to RealNetworks to allow users of the RealNetworks music service to play their digital music collections on iPods. In exchange, RealNetworks would make the iPod its primary device for its music store and for the RealPlayer software.

Apple not singing RealNetworks' tune
April 16, 2004 - 04:49 EDT   RealNetworks said yesterday that Steve Jobs had "rebuffed an offer by RealNetworks' chief executive Rob Glaser to meet and discuss forming an online music alliance involving Apple's best-selling iPod portable players," notes AP (see yesterday's report). "He's in the neighborhood, but whatever meeting Rob wanted with Steve isn't happening," said RealNetworks spokesman Greg Chiemingo in the story. "Steve just doesn't want to open the iPod, and we don't understand that."

Well.. that Steve is a wise guy Cool

Real on the iPod is a very bad idea. We don´t need it, the market is better without it and hopefully we will see the end of RealNetworks soon.
