I don't think it's a question of getting the Evolver or the G2. I think, after you get the G2, what of your existing gear can you get rid of?
Seriously, the G2 is really fabulous, but it is for patchers. If you aren't into rolling your own sounds, you won't like the G2 a bit. If you like sound design, then what else is there that compares to the G2? I think a Kyma, but way more money, and a much steeper learning curve.
If his image doesn't lite your fire,
and this one does,
then get an Evolver. Last edited by mosc on Sun Apr 11, 2004 2:03 pm; edited 1 time in total |

My screen shot of the G2 editor is of a full hi res screen shrunk quite a bit. Here is a screen scrape of just a protion of the screen, but at actual size so you can get an idea how it looks in reality.
As you can see, there is a lot of detail, but it's readable. You can use a lower res screen than I and it will look bigger, but you won't be able to get as much on the screen.

Sharing patches is one of the great things about the NM products. If you are working on a patch, I'm sure there will be people to help you work the bugs out, right here on this forum. With the NM products, you are never alone. |

that is correct, I have a G2, G1, and an Evolver. the kinds of sounds the evolver can generate would be very difficult to create on a G2, I think. I have never heard anything else like the evolver and I have had a lot of synths since 1977 to the present.
That is not to say that either is better. just different. I have the first evolver model ($500), so it is not too big of an investment. I would like to get the poly when it comes out but you still need to first model for the controls. unless you intend to strictly edit using a computer.
I'd get both a g2 and an evolver. Trouble is, you do that and you end up getting three not two synths. If you must get just one, the g2 has far more modules to control. but the evolver just has that analog sound that can't be duplicated with a digital synth.
Good Luck in your choice |

Jimh54, welcome to our site.
Thanks for joining in this discussion. Since you have both synths in question here, I defer to your opinion. I wonder if you might post as an attachment an mp3 file of an example of the type(s) of sounds(s) the Evolver makes that would be difficult for the G2. Just curious. |

I think that says it all. I am more interested in composing than sound designing, besides that I have such a huge collection of every possible sound that I think I will never be able to use them all anyway so why bother making new ones except for fine tuning existing sounds, effecting them etc. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Jakeez, welcome to electro-music.com, and to the G2.
I listened to your track. I bit heavy on the echo and reverb to my taste, but that's just my bias. I'm also suffering from an ear infection right now, so don't take my feedback as negative. Keep on making music. |

When you mean 'self playing patch' (or noodle) when you say 'evolving''pad' than the G2 would be very suitable ... using the inter-slot communication possibilities you would be able to create one huge self playing patch using all eight DSPs (on an expanded system).

Jakeez, Ardmore is not far away - we should get together for a G2 jam some time - there are at least 4 of us in the area now! |
