Sources hint at forthcoming Mac OS X technologies |
|
|
Major changes are in store for forthcoming revisions to the Mac OS X operating system, according to tidbits obtained by AppleInsider over the last 6 months.
To date, only a select few — outside of the development team — have been privy to Apple's plans for Mac OS X 10.4. According to sources, the company has been performing private briefings with partners during small or one-on-one meetings, all of which are covered by non-disclosure agreements. As a result, details of rumored features are vague and confirmation on timeframes is severely lacking.

Another rumour is that Apple is redesigning the Disk Utility in order to provide high end disk repair and data recovery features. Right now the best tool around for basic repair is the DiskWarrior utility from http://www.alsoft.com . The HFS Extended file system Apple uses now just recently got journaling added. Turning this on is recommended unless you are using your disk for HD audio recording or similar tasks. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

you bet it is! I saw it at work few days ago when my external firewire HD disappeared from my desk. With the help of a friend and of Disk Warrior we were able to recover the disk directory and have again access to the data, back up everything and initialize the HD. They were 24 hours of panic. I thought I had lost everything. Now I have installed TechTool Pro4 that at start up saves disk directories of each HD on a different one hoping not to lose all of them at once _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Isn't there RAID 1 or RAID 0/1 for Mac? |

Sure there is. Sure.. you have the full range of RAID setups you can manage using ordinary software control.. but personally I prefer external hardware controllers. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Right... external firewire drives.. sure.. yeah.. Diskwarrior is a great tool to have around. Setting up a simple mirrored raid using external firewire drives is not that practical really.. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
