SND SAM-16? Subject description: SND SAM-16? |

Hiya,
Has anyone ever seen / used / own/ed one of these?
http://www.s-n-d.com/sam16e.html
It's an analog step-sequencer, made by some German bloke. Apparently it's been used by Basic Channel (confirm?deny?).
By the way- this is my first ever post. So howdy! |

I like that it looks like something pulled from an East German radar station circa 1962; I'll bet that front panel could stop a round from an AK47. You half expect to turn it round and find it full of valves, relays and dead spiders...
Then again, it's pricey- three times the cost of an Oberkorn? |

Howdy Paisleythrone
Basic Channel eh? Dunno about Maurizio using this actual item? He may have done, but it wasn't just this sequencer that created that sound alone.
If you want to save money, follow the Klee sequencer project in the DIY forum here. Although the Klee can sequence, it can also invent sequences making it very useful for chance compositions- some of which can sound quite Detroit-ish.
The Klee is here.

Well, they're listed as a client on this bloke's website, so it seems entirely possible.
Naturally, seeing as how Basic Channel operate a professional mastering facility (D&M Berlin), one can be sure there's plenty of arcane analog trickery involved in their distinctive productions, over and above their choice of sequencer/s.
Nevertheless, I am reminded of Plastikman's reference years ago to the distinctive 'slip-timing' of the TR909, and how hard that is to reproduce using samples and MIDI.
Could it not be that a sequencer which claims such accurate timing as the SAM-16, may have contributed the 'forward-lean' to Basic Channel's rhythms, which makes them so propulsive?

Looks great, unfortunately I am a DIY-phobe! I fall to pieces when a soldering-iron is put in my hands.
Speaking of DIY though, I am intrigued to see that Plan B will shortly be producing the Milton sequencer in Eurorack format.
Basically I am working myself up to getting a Cwejman S1 mk.II, with a VC/Gate sequencer as an accompaniment. But ideally a sequencer with a few tricks up its sleeve... _________________ Why don't you eat carrots? |
