Subject description: Throbbing Gristle device!

From the plans online (at Cloned Analog Gear) - Guitar Effects Pedal by R.Gwinn published in Practical Electronics magazine (from many years ago)

There's a bit of mystery surrounding this design 'cos ?Chris Carter? from Throbbing Gristle was meant to have designed this pedal... Basically, this article is the Gristilizer

Its very much based along synth lines - bipolar power etc.

2parts:

1) VCLFO (lefthandside of the image)
Oscillator to provide ramp up/down, triangle and square waveforms.
In the plans this is controlled by a pot slung between -v and gnd, so I used another opamp (spare in a Tl074) to provide more general voltage control.
The oscillator isn't actually all that great - could do with some buffers and the triangle waveform has a wierd'n'nasty dip/spike at its highest point. Still, its a little bit different...

2) VCA / VCF (righthandside of the image)
-- now this IS good! Its a really simple little circuit that takes an audio input, drives it quite hard and then VCA or VCFs it dependent on a bias control and the modulation input.. The circuit has a really gnarly sound to it - good effect!

...I should do some more tests with it and record some sounds.

...this is a good one for noisy people!

Not the neatest panel layout --- partly 'cos I did the two separate boards (Osc and Amp) and the Osc board has the 4 way switch mounted on it...

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

Oh yeah - plenty of other update images just up on my modular page

me too
interesting about the vco is that it uses a diode to reset the cab, rather than a fet. haven´t seen that before.

That's so typical of Practical Electronics mag- they always show the top of the board with the component layout, then omit the actual foil layout- probably because they had their fingers stuffed into Phonosonics (the people who provided a lot of music based kits within the magazine).

Funnily enough I recently emailed PE/EE/ETI (yeah they're all one mag now)- and started chatting with the dude who founded phonosonics. However he completely missed the point when I suggested doing the Minisonic Mk3. He couldn't quite understand why anyone would want a noise box rather than a performance instrument

Ok I've (finally) gotten around to uploading some sounds - they're not all that great really.. but do show the good trem sounds, gnarly nature and quite squelchy VCF..

BugModular Gristilizer Sounds

The module is actually now out of my rack (until I get some more empty FracRaks from Paia) 'cos I've built a further 3 XRVCOs (they're great!)

Reviving a dead thread...

Did you have to sub any parts? Some of what's in there is a little hard to come by...

Hey, there's plenty to write about this subject from me -- changes / ideas / meeting Roy Gwinn who wrote the original article... not right now though! More soon - hopefully sooner rather than later..!..

OK, well, please share whatever insight you might have when you get a chance... I've got a friend who is considering doing a small run of boards once he works stuff out on veroboard...
