Migrating from MacG5 to MacIntel Subject description: Gotchas |
 |
|
In the hope of saving someone else the trouble of looking around for the answers I reckon it'd be neighborly to post some hints here.
As some might know, I just got forcibly upgraded from a Mac G5 Tower to a new Mac Pro Dual Xeon D2, courtesy of Applecare. One of the challenges beyond the relatively mild and friendly challenge response dialogue with C74 was that MSP broke, fairly hard. I got -4 errors loading such staples as gain~ and ezdac~, and no sound would work in my patches. I trashed the older Max/MSP 2.5 install, moved away all of my externals, reinstalled Max/MSP 2.6.3, and still got these errors.
Turns out trashing your preferences file will fix this.
Also, most 3rd party externals stop working until you get universal versions of them. Beware. I've lost sfplay~ and a bunch of my fft~ 3rd party externals. Of course I don't remember where I got them so it'll be a pleasant evening finding them all again. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

sfplay~ is part of the MSP distribution, so you should have that. Have you wiped all traces of your old Max installation and reinstalled?
http://www.maxobjects.com should help you track down any other objects you're missing. |

yeah, I'm being silly. It's fluidsynth~ that's missing, the patch I was working on had both sfplay~ and fluidsynth~, and I thought I was missing the other one. sfplay~ is fine - in fact now that I've got my brand spankin new MOTU PCIe-424, I even have the channels to the mixer back.
thanks for the link too. I did wipe all traces of my old Max installation, except that I also have Pluggo and Hipno, so it's not that easy. Oh, and some other runtime stuff. Including your Scrambler. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

And I've started getting some of the 3rd party externals back. It looks like it really has to be a clean break. Kinda sucks when you have other people's runtimes and stuff, but I guess that's the breaks. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Yeah, it's a bitch, but it's not really Cycling74's fault. As I understand it, Apple only supports one type of architecture per process. No mixing code types.
One thing that may help is to make your own clearly defined hierarchy of folders for holding third party externals and abstractions. If they're not all mixed in with the standard Max stuff, it's easier to see what things you've added.

Actually, that is a very practical suggestion. Although it looks like I'm going to be using less 3rd party externals for a while until more universals show up.
All's well that ends well, though. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
