Can a Roland VariOS be used like Ableton Live?

In the US, these things are being sold at around $300, so I'm naturally curious...

They do some cool stuff, but you can't sample in real-time (you have to get your samples on a computer, then upload then to the varios, then you can manipulate them at will).

I think it can do some great things, especially since it's hardware. I suppose it's all about what it is you want to do with it.

In the context of our band, I'll probably use it to play back some samples, occasionally using the Vari-phrase features to recontextualize the sample (eg. make new melodies out of it). Sort of what Sigur Ros does with their sample playback device(s), using Jonsi's vocal recordings.

And in the context of home studio work, the audio editing and arrangement features look really convenient.

That was the price at Musician's Friend. Decided not to get it when I realized how hard it was to get the Vocal Composer card.
