Resistors |
|
|
I've got bags and bags of 5% resistors left from my old building days. Now I've renewed my hobby (thanks to electro-music) I wonder if these are useable now or frowned upon. The pictures of new boards I look at seem to use a lot of 1% resistors. I would assume the 1/4 watt resistors I have are still good after 20years, so I see no real reason to chuck 'em.
What do you guys thinks, is 1% the standard these days? |

You see a lot of 1% since 1% is sometimes necessary and as there is little price difference these days, most people (like me) only stock 1%.
But your 5% should be fine for most things where no 1% is specified. _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

we see 1% resistors more and more because they became cheaper and cheaper. i have no reason to buy 5% anymore.
at the shop i usually buy i will have to pay 2.50EUR for a batch of 100 metalfilm 1%. that's okay for me.
BTW they are rated for 1/2W nowadays... (my dealer still labels them as 1/4W though!) _________________

Really? I buy 1/4 watt from rapid (http://www.rapidonline.com/) and they also have 1/2w but does that mean my 1/4w ones will be safe upto 1/2w? _________________ Clacktronics.co.uk |

I buy 1% now, because of little diference in price. But I've not noticed much improvement in noise, etc. I still use the 5% I have cuz their still good to me.

I use 5% all the time. I sometimes even use 5% when 1% are specified, I just ohm them out to make sure I am within range... I can usually find what I need in 3 tries.
Don't throw away those resistors... give them away if nothing else.

Thanks for the replies. I will keep my resistors. Future ones I buy will be 1%. I usually measure them anyway just to make sure, I never did learn the resistor code! |

It's like a rainbow and then three extra ... you did learn about that one I hope and the pot of gold and so on?
Ah well, measuring might even be quicker, especially when the arms get shorter with age _________________ Jan
