Subject description: what do these diodes do?

hi experts,

i breadboarded the wasp vcf these days. the circuit provides two diodes as part of the feedback circuit (resonance). i wonder what they are actually doing.
i tried different diodes and that changed the sound of the resonance quite much...

I think they act like some sort of capacitor... If I remember right, diodes does that for AC. But I'm not sure... Confused

The diodes increase the feedback gain above some signal level (when they start to conduct), to prevent hard clipping.

(The Wasp VCF belongs to the category of state variable filters, where resonance increases with feedback gain decreasing.)
