Hi,

If I receive spam by somebody who's mail address is Lillie Ashby@electro-music.com, does this means 'Lillie' is subscribed to
e-m?

Wout

BTW where is the blue header (beneath the name of the site) with links gone? Only the slashes stayed...

Not necessarily. I can put whatever I want in the from: header on an email. Look specifically at the mail headers and trace the origin of the message, specifically the originating mail server IP address.

I regularly get spam with my own name on it, sent from some spambot, in the vain hope that my spam filter will let mail from myself through to myself. Nice try, but my spam filter checks for points of origin.

What happens is that people, or computers in fact, find a domain name, in this case electro-music.com, and then they put random names in front of that to fake email addresses. These addresses are used for two purposes, they are used to send spam to and they are used as a fake reply or sender address probably in the hope that the receiver will not accept the mail and will send it "back", which is not back at all but to the fake address. Even when the address is fake, the domain is not and the mail will end up in some inbox looking like an error message to be investigated by some postmaster (who likely has some computer program running to kill such mail). There have been days that my companies domain, login-bv.com, received about 1000 of such false error messages each hour. It is likely that electro-music.com sees such numbers as well on occasions, or even more as the domain has much more traffic and is mentioned in google pages many more times.

Anyway, it's a good idea to never take senders or receivers as stated in email to be true, they are faked more often than they are not.

Re. the blue header, I've seen what you described as well a while ago, when after the last crash electro-music.com switched to a new IP address - pressing CTRL+F5 then worked for me and I never saw it again. What browser are you using?

Oh and I checked, we have no users with names that start with "lil" or "ash".

Moving this to the electro-music.com sub forum. It's of interest to everyone.
