Rare bargain on Motorola MC1494L (Sold out) Subject description: Used in the Bode FS, Buchla 285 |

I'm told that this is the non-military spec'd version of the MC1594L.
Considering that I've recently been quoted prices of up to $75.00 per chip from a broker, this is a Godsend. If you're into RMs that must be trimmed and stand a chance of bleed. Mmmm, vintage.
Lots of 10, never used, $7.25 plus shipping (USA).

Edit: It's not in the Oberheim; the MC1495 is. Last edited by Peake on Thu Nov 08, 2007 7:07 pm; edited 2 times in total |

No, it's OK. This is information that will be of value to some members.
Personally, I like the laser trimmed multipliers from Analog Devices. Hey, before you jump on me, these are vintage devices and were introduced in the early 70s. If you want, you can add a trim pot to detune them and get all the bleed through you want. _________________ --Howard

How dare you use quality parts!!!
The RMs I like, excepting the GX1 and CS80, all use the 1494 or earlier ICs. None of my favorite RMs use the 1496. I don't know why. There's just a rawness that I like. Vintage oscillators and chips like the 1458 in the circuit might also help. Who knows.
I'll try multiturn trimpots and see if they null correctly or not.
BTW, the Aries RM schematic is available at

Cool. I ordered some. The Aries schematic looks very simple. Is it worth building more than one? Oh, and how do you trim these? _________________ Check out my music |

Madly enough, so does the CS80/ GX1 RM schematic
Did the EMS VCS3 use the 1496 or the 1494 I can't remember.
btw, "Nebulous dawn" from Tangerine Dream's " 'Zeit' LP is VCS3 RM heaven My wife got that sound once on her Nord Modular. I've NEVER been able to get it back again _________________ ACHTUNG!

I didn't look at the Aries schemo long enough to notice if there were trimmers. Use .05% resistors or invite bleed?
Edit: Whoops, made me look. There are X and Y null trimpots on the Aries RM. But, looking at the schemos, you knew that. Try multiturn trims for accuracy.
The Synthi Ring Modulator likely uses the earlier LM1495, like the Oberheim pedal. |
