MacBook pro Subject description: Recommended external hard disk |
|
|
Hi Guys,
My MacBook Pro has arrived and as I have got a 200MB of samples etc I am looking for a decent mobile external hard disk, preferably fast with a large storage capacity and low weight.
Has anyone got any recommendations?
Cheers

You have an MBP, so that means you are blessed with Firewire 800.
I´ve started to buy those LaCie metal thingies with FireWire 400/800 + eSata. These are OK, at least as OK as any of the prosumer stuff out there but they are not really that portable if you see what I mean. But.. you´ll be using the drive for samples so I guess Firewire 800 is what you need. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Hi,
I have had a look and the "Little Big Disks" look interesting as they are bus powered and consist of two disks in raid 0, expensive though.
Have you ever tried one of these?
Cheers

Nope.. never used those. I have stacks of the eSata/FW400+FW800 drives.
Which interface is on the mirrorthingie? I guess in this case speedwise the interface is more important _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Its got the lot 800, 400 and usb.
The 200GB is two 2.5" 7.2K disks, 320 is two 2.5 5.4K disks. Both cost the same at arounf 200 pounds in the UK, double the cost of a standard lacie 500GB drive!
Max throughput (so lacie reckon) is 82MB/s on firewire 800.
Main advantage is bus powered and only 650 g in weight so nicely portable.
Think I'm gonna go for one.
Cheers

Hi Andy!
In one word;
Lacie.
(d2??)
Although that Iomega T1 drive looks damn cool too- as long of course that you aren't going anywhere
I've got a Firelite II as well. This thing is pocket size and is powered from Firewire- but it's so small- which is great! It's worth having a pocket drive imo. I also think Lacie make one too?
hope that helps _________________ ACHTUNG!

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I went for the lacie "little big drive" 320GB http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10724
Small, light and bus powered, price was a bit steep though.
MacBook is pretty nice, screen is good, the only problem being slightly uneven back lighting, but 1920x1200 on a laptop is pretty neat.
Fairly quite as well, cannot hear the HD and only small amounts of fan noise, it does get bloody hot though.
Ooh I just worked out how to get the keyboard to light up, I like that!
Cheers

Their site is down for the moment, but I've had a 200GB Firewire 400 drive from Pacific Pro Audio for more than 2 years and have been very satisfied with it. As you can guess, the company makes external drives for digital audio use. _________________ Current and recent work on Soundcloud
