I haven't yet seen XR2206s anywhere for cheaper than at Unicorn electronics... $3 per piece is quite decent as that's half the price they generally cost here in Europe, IMHO.

Looks like BGMicro is out of stock on the 8038.

Here's a list I gathered a while back for the 8038:

====
This is a list of suppliers with the 8038 listed in stock. This is by no means a complete list; it's a result of my check of my usual suppliers:

Debco Electronics $7.99
http://www.debcoelectronics.com/

Abra Electronics $6.99
http://www.abra-electronics.com/ $6.99

Unicorn Electronics $3.49
http://www.unicornelectronics.com/IC/GENERATORS.html

Ocean State Electronics $7.95
http://www.oselectronics.com/ose_p81.htm

Futurlec (one type for $15.95, the other for $13.95)
http://www.futurlec.com/

Don't know if the prices/stock are still true, but it gives some other places to look.

Yep - the Unicorn one is gone.

ABRA still has'em same price, your neck of the woods, too.

I like ABRA, BTW - great little place.

I got a dozen 8038's from BG shortly after Scott pointed it out.

I would say the best deal you will likely get is the price you pay TODAY, a few simple folks here can create a critical mass of interest in no time for the choice parts. I also grabbed a dozen joysticks from electronicsurplus yesterday, after seeing their juicy low price advertised in a nother thread. The # in stock has gone down by about 40 pieces in the last day or so. Th eprice will also probably increase as his supply dwindles.

Will I build the 8038 VCOs today or tomorrow? Nah, but I now know that I CAN build them and neednt sweat it.

I've used ICL8038, but I would think the XR would work just as well(?).

FYI, both Abra and Unicorn are out of stock on the 8038.

Abra says the XR parts are discontinued, they will substitute the ICL at US$19.95 (Ow!)

It's unfortunate that some many good circuits in AS21C depend on chips that are rapidly disappearing. Sad

Looks like another good LFO isn't gonna get built.

Dang, Debco is out, too.

Ocean State still lists them for $7.95. Wonder how true that is?

According to the data sheet schematics, these are the same circuits. However, the max ratings suggest the XR had a little more range, which is why I mentioned it may be slightly better in my book. And of course, XR was making the chip a couple decades after Intersil, suggesting that the fabrication process may have gotten more worked out in the interim. (Although, at one time I heard some strange rumors about the XR clean rooms).

Anyway, the circuits are the same, so I wouldn't worry about using either one in any audio application.

And as someone else has mentioned, when you see music chips, grab a dozen, even if you don't have an immediate use for them. I did with the 8038 from BG, and am set for life.

Smallbear carries the XR2206 and is located in NYC, IIRC. Meaning that you can arrange for local pickup. arcadechips is probably the best retail source for LM566 that I've found, plus side being that they also carry the SN chippy. Also their service is second to none IME. As for 8038's, I'm glad I have the precious few i do, as they are disappearing faster than magic brownies at a jam band fest...

Don't think it really matters, but yes the CP version should be OK.
