but I am not a sausage.

What do you think, do pictures of diagrams work better?

Then I will describe the first simple patch.

Put a patch cord from VCO1 Audio Out to VCO2 CV In.
Turn off Sync
Make sure VCO1 is in tune
Adjust VCO2 frequency until you find a good harmonic.

For more fun, add modulation of VCO2 from the AD envelope generator.

Try different combinations of waveforms for VCOs.

Here is a blank patch diagram you can use as a template to post patches with.

Here's another example of using FM to get extra timbre. This time, VCO2 is modulating the filter at audio FM speed. In this example, VCO1 is sync'ing VCO2, and VCO2 is tuned down about a 5th or so, but you can play around with that. The important part is to drive the filter's CV with audio. As touchy as the envelope generation is on this instrument, the response to modulation is really very good. Play with the filter range and type.

Hmm, never thought of trying that. Thanks!

I would not think the Vactrol in the filter could respond fast enough to be modulated with audio.....need to try this.

It does not seem to like high (>2-3k) frequencies, but mine takes low and midrange quite nicely, and I get a fairly strong artifact from it. Let me know if you can reproduce it. I'll record it if you want to hear what mine's doing.

OK, here's a fun one, building on the FM capabilities. I'm trying to do patches here that use ONLY the Wretch, to give an idea of what it is capable of (which is a lot).

In this patch, VCO1 is frequency modulating VCO2. Notice the very different frequency settings too. The sync switch is on, but makes no difference (our frequencies are so far out it can't).

LFOs are on full, modulating both the VCO2 freq and adding some Fc to the filter. I don't think the pulser has a chance to show up, but some Wretch Machines have more pulse than others.

Both the patch diagram and example sound are included this time, just in case you aren't getting the same thing.

oh yeah - I am just holding down a note here - not playing around.

OK, so continuing to explore some of the more interesting things we can do.

Let's look at the pulser. This is probably the most underrated option on the whole instrument. Thermionicjunky mentioned some stuff about this in a different thread, that the best way to get the pulser to fire is to not overdrive it. This is most definitely the technique I have to use to get mine to fire up - back way off on the VCO outputs.

Now, it's not too big a deal to actually get the pulser to fire, given those rules. But of course, Eric thoughtfully included CV for the pulser, and an audio breakin point. Now, oddly, I find that when you patch into that audio breakin, it is different from the normalled path.

And of course, you can put a DC VC into that pulser CV to change the pitch of the pulser. But consider this patch. If I feed VCO1's signal both to the shaper's signal path, low level so it kicks the pulser into gear, and then modulate the CV of the pulser with the same frequency waveform, the pulse wants to lock on more. In fact, we get a beat out of it.

And even more so, if we take the audio of VCO2 and jack it into the break in on the shaper. Now, the VCO1 -> VCO2 relationship is lightly synched, mainly because the range is different (VCO2 is tuned at least an octave lower, maybe 2). you can mess with the frequency of VCO2 to watch the phenomenon more. Anyway, add some additional slow modulation to the already wacked out pulser, and let's keep the filter Fc low enough so we're not blasting hard edges, and we're into large engine territory.

I'm not sure why this sounds so different if you remove either the VCO1 -> Pulser CV or the VCO2 -> Shaper Audio In. There's something about the pulser's characteristic that makes it want to pulse more this way. I'd love to understand it more.

Anyway, try this out. You HAVE to keep the VCO levels low, or you'll shut down the pulser. In fact, if you stall the pulser, pull VCO1's level down and slowly bring it back up until the pulser fires.

oh, was the blank messed up? I'll repost it.

I'm on a Mac, I'm using Keynote to make these patch charts. I scanned one in from the manual to a JPG, and de-yellowed it a bit in Photoshop. Then I imported it to Keynote where I can add all the little arrows and patch lines.

to get the big-ass version of the blank, click on it, a new window should pop up with it, you can save it in Safari or Firefox.

yeah, iWork.. if you have open office, or MS office you could use Draw or Powerpoint to do the same thing. I'm just exporting the diagrams to jpg anyway.
