Yes they will do fine. The metal tab is pin 8 and viewed from above, the pins count down clockwise, just like a regular DIP-8.

For now on, it might be a good idea for anyone designing a board that utilizes the 566 VCO to put the PCB "footprint" for both the Metal CAN and DIP packages. I will most likely do a Rev "B" board for the UD-1 that will add this. I know you can bend the leads around to make it fit but I am a stickler for neatness.

I know this VCO chip is really good and has some fantastic literature written about it but probably would not encourage anyone to use it in a new design if they plan to market it since the supply of these beautys are diminishing. Too bad for that Very Happy For DIY, sure go ahead if you have a few on hand. The XR2206 could be the closest replacement. For basic VCO duties, the CD4046 will do. Both of these are in plentiful supply Very Happy

Dave Brown did a VERY nice job with a 566 can...

I don't really have room to include both footprints on the 566 VCO board, but it looks like a little careful bending and forming does the trick.

I would agree that the 566 really shouldn't be used in a "new" design, but the UD-1 is a good use for a 566 if you have one. Of course, I think the 566 VCO is another good use, but I'm biased Wink

Tim,

Any idea when the next run of 566 VCO boards will be in?

My guess is with the holidays, we will probably see them early in January. Hopefully sooner, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

You just bend the leads a bit to fit the hole pattern, then just press it down. The leads conform quite nicely.

The frequency coefficient on the LM566 is different from the NE566 but everything adjusted just fine.
