Chapter six of Speech and Language Processing has a fairly straightforward discussion of HMMs if you are comfortable with some probability formulae. The entire second edition of this book is on line in draft form, including chapter 6; hard copy is due out within the next 6 months. Musicmathics, Vol 1 has some very light coverage of Markov Chains with respect to composition. Not available on line. _________________ When the stream is deep

Thanks for the reference, Acoustic Interloper, I grabbed a copy of the first reference and lightly skimmed it. Seems to be an obvious next step in the development, however I had a different thought. It's good enough at 5 phonemes, so let it do that and then create something musical out of the neural net.
By putting in delays in some for loops and driving sounds with the neuron activation values, then some sort of "AI brain music" might occur. It might sound interesting, in fact one could take lots of programs and encode their data into music somehow. It would be like listening to the software itself.
I don't know if the net would go click-clack or whish-whoosh, but it would be interesting to hear. Trouble is, I've been out of ChucK programming for a while. First I invented a pretty neat oscillator and now I have to publish it, and then I wrote a surprisingly successful sports prediction program that has been occupying my time. I'll let you know when the oscillator is ready for public release, Kassen. But I'll get back to the AI stuff soon enough.

Sports prediction seems like a very good idea.
People wouldn't need to attend matches that would likely end in a bad way any more. Eventually the matches themselves would no longer be needed, that would quickly save lots of money as soccer fans won't be rioting any more.
I looked at your page and it seems that your program is considerably lighter on the CPU then other sports related programs like Deep Blue. It'd be funny if yours predicted the more powerful hardware will lose before it has been turned on.

Isn't there a P.K.Dick story that goes along those lines?
But yeah, that was fun to type. I hope you'll have a good and stimulating year as well, looking forward to reading about your oscillator, it'd be nice if that one did something unusual that we could do digitally as well? _________________ Kassen |
