Getting a MacBook? |
|
|
Should I get a badly-specced Dell laptop or a Macbook? If the Macbook is the best option, when do the new models come out? Should I get an older model?
[Edit] I'll be running Linux and Windows -- under Bootcamp? -- too (I may can Mac OS in favour of Linux if it proves too tedious). _________________ -- Say "&Eth;onne hit wæs hrenig weðer" |

To be honest- my experience so far is that it is better to keep XP well away from Apple. Bootcamp worked flawlessly until I updated to Leopard. Leopard is an awesome OS, but for some reason which I can't quite fathom, XP under bootcamp flakes out and the computer seems to just turn off with no apparent reason.
VMware Fusion is OK but I really want them to improve the graphics capability, as it is like running my old Dell GX150 Optiplex
Oh heck what the hell- just go for a Macbook, they are just better on the eyes _________________ ACHTUNG!

Its weird you are having problems with bootcamp under Leopard, mine works fine.
What happens, it just powers down after a while?

I have a MacBook pro and have no problems running XP under bootcamp, infact it is really fast running XP.
I also run it under VMWare fusion but the performance is not great in fusion at the moment. I have talked to the developers and they are working on improveing performance, especially when both cores are turned on.
I must admit I love my MacBook, the only problem I have is that it gets really hot, apart from that its a great machine, I run two versions of XP, Red Hat Server 64 and leopard on it with no problems at all.
Cheers

Thanks for all the help. I quite fancy the MacBook, if only because it is better specced than the Dell and that I can do WebObjects development (since Apple seems to have put wind back in that projects sails). Being able to boot all systems is a boon.
The heat shouldn't be a problem, it's too cold in Norway anyway. _________________ -- Say "&Eth;onne hit wæs hrenig weðer" |

Yes. completely at random- no warning. But it never happens when Leopard is running- well yes and no. If I haven't run bootcam for a while I get no problem, but if I run XP, then run Leopard, the problem 'shifts over'.
Can't work it out at all.
Maybe it's a registry thing? Or perhaps I should stop using my Bootcamp partition as my VMware partition as well? _________________ ACHTUNG!
