Because the DIY forum here on electro-music.com has been so active, we felt it deserved a higher place in our forum hierarchy. Therefore, DIY Synths has been moved up a level and several other forums in the Instruments and Equipment section have been moved under DIY Synths.

This forum reorganization will probably continue for the next several days, or more. We are sorry for an inconvenience this may have in making the site difficult to navigate, or if your personal bookmarks have gotten messed up.

Any suggestions and comments are appreciated.

I like it, but will our little "For Sale" sub forum come back?

Tom, the SC section was moved there as well based on the reasoning that CK, SC and Csound were more like "DIY synth building" then like "softsynths". I hope you agree with that reasoning,

Reaktor wasn't moved as I think that's typically treated like a softsynth and I don't think anybody knows yet where MAX fits, it seems smack on the line.

Well, that's ignoring my input, when I specifically said MAX/MSP was software, but hey. I can be sanguine.

I'm sorry if I made you feel ignored but, erm, of course it is software. We can hardly start qualifying based only on that or that will be the end of half of our new section, including the micro-controller part. DIY is clearly more then just soldering parts and I think it's clear that you can use ready-made parts in it, maybe you like rolling oily paper to make capacitors but most people -I believe- don't.

As I see it MAX is software that can "compile" graphical "programs" to a stand-alone binary so clearly DIY.

It's also a closed source program that mainly gets used as a sort of modular synth; interesting but clearly not DIY as such.

So, I think it's kinda balancing on the edge.... A good moment to be sanguine indeed.

:¬)
Sorry again.

Is there a preference setting to have the subforums displayed below the threads of the main forum? I now have to scroll down every time the forum returns me to the main index. Which is fine once or twice but gets pretty annoying after a day.

Yah.

Part of the issue may be that that section is one of the sections that has a bit of a overdose in stickies and announcements. There's one there that announces a new links section from 2005... I think we need to continually re-evaluate how relevant stickies and announcements still are.

The "Electro music.com" has 12 announcements and 13 stickies as well, for example, this really devaluates their perceived importance, I think.

The same applies to the How-to section.

Yes, this is a problem, I agree. There is no setting to do what you would like, unfortunately.

The only logical thing to do is put all the topics in the DIY forum into a sub forum called discussion. Of course, a hack to the code might be in order. AFAIK, electro-music.com has one of the most extensive hierarchies of any forum. We are pushing the envelope in this area. Already much of the code is home grown.

A discussion forum might make sense there, yes.

Hierarchies are cool, as long as they work for us and don't start working against us. There is -for example- a stray section on one of the past festivals in "electromusic.com" yet we also have a top level section on those festivals.

I also think we should consolidate all those sticky topics about rules and so on to a single "manual and rules" sticky and un-sticky anything that's no longer urgently important. We have a search function, people who really need to find something will find it. If some section has a lot of sticky topics of important basic info people need all the time and that we don't want to cover in dozens of topics I think we are better off with a single sticky that indexes those. Have a look at this;
http://shmups.system11.org/viewforum.php?f=5

That's a forum that mostly frowns on opening new topics on subjects that have already been discussed so they have those alphabetical indexes in locked topics that are maintained by volunteers. I think that's a nice and clean system. Out of the box fora tend to index just based on the time of the last post while a index based on subjects makes a lot more sense for usability, unless the topic is "current events" in a certain field, but then you get the default index for free anyway.

I think that "General Synth DIY" must be a sub- forum under DIY hardware and software.

thanks,
