using algorithmic midi sources to control modular? |
|
|
Back in the days before i found synth diy, when i was mainly using plug-ins to create many sounds, I used to come across MIDI plug-ins alot, some of them were standard fare (like appregiators) and some were more exotic (xoxos made some algorithmic ones...random cc value generators or note data in response to variables). now i lost most of those plugins (dead hard-drive) and am looking for new ones.
i was just wondering if and how you all go about incorporating your computers into your modular setup. I am thinking about dusting off Bidule to start setting up some sort of random note midi patches. So if any of you know of any good programs or especially PLUGINS for this type of data creation, let me know. and if this is the wrong place to be posting this, let me know. i imagine that there must be some new plugins available or even new apps that some of you could recommend.

Not what your looking for - but I thought it would be great to use max/msp with a modular - shame it costs so much _________________ Clacktronics.co.uk |

I'm using Max/MSP to drive my modular. It seems like a good fit. I don't have to "change brains" too much when using the pair.
A little info about what I'm doing can be found here: http://www.xfade.com/Gyre

I haven't used it, but the Numerology sequencer strikes me as a good fit for use with a modular.

The grand daddy of Atari based algorithmic software would be Tunesmith, by Dr. T's Music Software. If you could get an Atari emulator to talk to your MIDI ports, that'd be noteworthy (no pun intended). _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I use Max/MSP. Learning curve is a little steep but you can do so much with it. I've used it to send CCs to a MIDI/CV converter controlling a modular synth. I also did the same with a Nord G2 -- it sends MIDI CCs out and you can create all sorts of algorithmic stuff. |

There is also vvvv: a multipurpose toolkit.

It can do lots of stuff. And it's free. |

+1 for Numerology
I use it with the modular all the time - works great, it's fun and easy to use.

Max/MSP costs a bit, but the support is excellent. Also there are so many quality patches and externals out there, many for free. IMO it really is the most robust option. And if you just want algorithmic MIDI, you don't even need MSP, so that halves the price. For someone getting started, Max blazes even on older machines so you could scoop up "passe" hardware for cheap. Max, an old PowerMac 8600, and a DX7 can still do tricks that scarcely anything else will. If one's got a fast machine and MSP then better still. I'd say Max is perfect for this stuff.
PD does sound like a great thing, but personally I have had little luck with it. I have tried several times and only recently did I even get it to do anything. Just seems harder to get started with, less feedback for the user. I'm sure it's powerful if one knows how to use it. Baffles me though.
IRCAMs OpenMusic is a very "musical" way to get into algorithmic music. The focus seems more high-level than Max, with LISP objects representing musical events. Learning curve less steep than Max. Not so real-time though, more for composition. Still, it's symbolic nature makes linear MIDI sequencers in DAWs look archaic.
For algo MIDI instruments which don't need to be patched together from so many pieces, I strongly recommend Numerology. It is a great bargain and absurdly fun to use. Very easy to get started with. The app is solid and reliable, can just do MIDI and/or host Audiounits. Numerology is one of the only sequencers which offers fully digital HUI and features but can also easily do analog-style sequencing. Even varying length sequences run at different clock divisions! Ever since there was real-time MIDI sequencing, I waited for something like Numerology to happen.
And I agree wholeheartedly about Dr. T software! The man was and is a visionary, and his music software even from about twenty years ago does things which have no equal, no comparison in any software which has come since. I have an Atari just so that I can run my Dr T stuff. Unfortunately my workshop/studio is too much of a mess now so I don't have my Falcon set up, but it is very much a priority. TuneSmith is one of the few apps which don't seem to run on the Falcon, but KCS/Omega, XOR, PVG, and MIDI Axe are all amazing. Very fun to explore. And of course there are Atari ST emulators if the original hardware isn't available, STeem works best. I am (slowly!) fixing up a second Atari also. There is so much amazing software for these machines, much of which can be downloaded for free from Tim Conrardy's site. |

I've found PD works pretty well. It's not easy to start with but I don't think that Max/MSP is either. You really need to dedicate a lot of time to get anywhere with it.
I'd download the pd-extended installer because it makes setting it up easier.
Then I'd go through the tutorials included with the installer. There is a cool pink-floyd patch that is fun to play with. Last edited by widdly on Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

if you've got STeem going, by all means get 'TUNESMITH'.
The coolest algorithmic MIDI source I've ever used. It's pretty interactive, too. |

I have used STeem in the past, but I don't usually keep a Windoze box running. I can't justify having one machine just to run an emulator of another...
So on my back burner I am gradually fixing up an Atari Mega4. I intend to install it in a rack chassis and add a few mods. Dual HD floppies, SCSI, VGA adaptor, MIDI mults. At this rate it could be a year or two before I get around to it.
As I recall, the only ST apps which haven't run on my Falcon are TuneSmith and TBasic. I tweeked the setup on my Falcon last time though so I should try them again. I miss playing with my ataris. |

Hey loss, that is an interesting piece!
It sounds like you are on to something there...
CJ: Out of curiosity, in what way did you use the DX7 with Max?
Is it possible to put in "edit" mode and then just feed it sysex or something?
I have a DX7II that I always wanted to be able to do something more interesting with. Unfortunately I haven't come across any cheap Jellinghaus programmers lately .
Would love to do something via midi though... Any pointers?
