IKEA "rast" bedside table

bought one of these today- not for mounting gear but for a bedside table! anyways, just eyeballing it looked really close, got home and got out my tape measure and sure enough, it fits 6U perfectly, with 2U on the nose below.

i did a few internet searches and saw that a few people have used these as rack enclosures already. just thought i'd pass it along here.

cost: 15$
inside dimensions are 19" x 10.5" high; 3.5" below- it's 11.5" deep.

cool!

I wonder if the designer is into synth-DIY Rolling Eyes

I saw these last time and my first thought was that they culd be used for this.

But I've already bought several 'TRYGGVE'-shelves for a synthesizers DIY cabinet. Perhaps I'll reconsider. Very Happy Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the info! Very Happy

EDIT: Why not have a rack on the side of the bed? Rolling Eyes Confused Laughing

EDIT AGAIN: Nice rack! Rolling Eyes

Yep!
My wife bought 5 of these and I confiscated them at once. I didn't use any rail, just pieces of wood to mount the modules...

Only, I don't have enough gear to fill 5 'Rast's, so I have a bigger problem now Wink

you can go much cheaper and DIY it and use angled aluminum pieces from home depot or elsewhere- i would recommend installing vertical rails first then building a "cage" ala frac rack or this .com thing depending on your panel sizes [or just buy the enclosure from PAIA or Blacet etc.].
yeah these thing are pretty awesome-

I used one of these for my AS system last year, found rack rail strip for next to nothing (about $12 aus) to fit out one of the tables.
I'm thinking of stacking the second one on top of this one using some of those big heavy duty catches on the sides so they can be held together but then pulled apart....and the bit at the bottom of the top rack will make a space for a single height effects unit or something.
They are such a spot on fit too Wink
I haven't bothered with dot com in them though as they would fill up too fast.

Have attached a pic of the finished rack.

I've used 'MACKIS'-boxes to house sequencers. Latest I used it for my Klee Smile (see build thread)

I was inspired by this discussion of the RAST, but trying to fit 5U high modules in I thought I needed something a bit bigger . I just bought a TRABY shelf unit. Removing the centre divider leaves 8U exactly across and 29" vertically - so 3 rows of 5U high modules plus 1U of multiples perhaps? (and an inch slack space)

Nice and thick sides and isn't too heavy either. And fits my ASM-2 pcb with about 3mm to spare Laughing

Just one thing we have to ask Ikea then: to sell rack profiles too!

yes I thought someone would have something at least to say on that matter! Rolling Eyes Laughing

It is a good find though- especially when one considers how much many of the modular synth manufacturers make on their cabinets! Shocked Exclamation

this one is actually closer to 1"x12" [.75"x11.75"] and yeah, maybe so, but only slightly- and considering the time saved, i'd say this is a really good deal. the long edges of all the boards are slightly beveled too, which is nice.

well. i am almost out of rack space on my 2 racks. (i am going to add multiples or some other small modules to fill the space)

SO-I TOOK my wifes old ikea shelf from our bedside (which housed my never used xbox) and VOILA

here it is: (ready to go)

so should i buy more paia enclosures to put in it or should i just rig up some kind of divider in the middle?

thanks all

You could always just put in middle rails. keep your eyes peeled on ebay etc though. I recently picked up for a group of us 8 double row euro racks with middle dividers for only $35 each Wink
