Hi everyone,

I am looking for a working, long out of production SAD-4096 for a analog BBD chorus delay designed by Craig Anderton. I built the project back when it was published in the early 80's, and used the hell out of it, it was a great sounding delay. When digitals started to become available cheaply, it got foolishly put on the shelf.

So I recently found it in a box in the closet, and when I powered it up, it worked for about a week, and then the delay times started to get very eratic. After another day or so, it stopped altogether. I have checked the circuit with a scope, and it looks like everything else is ok - clocking, signal conditioning, etc. I'd like to get this pedal back into service, and understand that it's not easy or feasable to retrofit an MN3005 into the same circuit.

Does anyone know of a source for this chip, or maybe have one they would be willing to part with?

Thanks!
Phil

Phil,

Let me check when I get home tonight. I think I have one I'd be willing to trade for chips again. I'll PM you tonight and verify.

Same here - have the Dod 680 delay - chip is gone ... so I am looking for a SAD4096 !! I've read in another post : (BBD RETICON SAD1024 under voltage controls) - that it is possible to swap the 4096 for a 1024 ? Does anybody know if these 2 chips are interchangeable? Ofcourse that would turn the delay into a chorus/flanger of sorts ... but at least it's not goin to the local landfill.

You can't just drop an SAD1024 in, they are not pin compatible. You would have to buil;d an adapter board for the SAD1024 in order to use it. Also, there are only 1024 delay stages as opposed to 4096 stages between the two chips, so you will loose some of the capability of the 680. But it would make a mean chorus/flanger!

Thanks Phil - ofcourse that would have been too easy!
I am not a technician but I am good with a solder iron. Is there any hope for me to perform this surgery? How would one make such an adapter, or where do I find some info about it? Some delays use a couple of 1024s - would it be possible to chain them together ... 1024 are still available for about $20.

I know of a couple of designs that chain a few BBD's together serially, and the results are very successful. I think there is one on generalguitargadgets.com that uses a pair of 3208's or 3205's that you could look at for insipration. I haven't done it myself though, but am going to try working in an mn3005 in place of the SAD4096 on the TH VCAD project from the old Midwest Analog website. Also, I think I have a layout for a daughter board that accepts an SAD 1024, and allows you to wire it to an SAD4096 socket. Let me dig a bit and see if I can find it for you....

Regards,
Phil
