Just a briefy post for now about the 4089 - I'd been wanting to test this out for a while and it actually behaves a bit different to how I expected, but very cool. (only for clocking so far). I've got another module on the bench at the moment that'll have two 4089 chips and lose the inputs for the multiplication rate.

As I said in the Shift Register thread, I'll be putting more details up shortly...

((Rate Multiplier is a strange and maybe confusing name - its more a divider - I'd presumed that the 4-bit binary setting of the switches would determine the division rate (1/16 through 15/16) but it seems to be doing something different --- I think, perhaps, something like the Blacet pattern gen that's found in Synapse))

bugs-could you do me a favor and take a picture of what the rear of the panel looks like? id love to see how you mounted the board

also, do you make your own banana cables? one thing that has scared me off from banana's is i cant seem to find a good cheap source of PREMADE cables.

thanks[/left]

Yeah, as I say, more details (schematic!) shortly - reckon over the weekend I'll have some time....

The switches are just SPDT centre off ---> the Up position ties the control input to V+, the mid position (ie no connection on the switch) makes the control low due to a 100k pull down resistor, and the Down position connects the external input socket.

The board is mini - just a little bit of stripboard with a few resistors and jumpers. So quick and easy to build! If you see the screw in the centre, near the bottom - that's affixing a mounting post which holds a home made little metal 90degree angle which holds on the stripboard. Yeah, I'll do a pic and you'll see how simple it is behind!

Yeah, and I do make my own banana cables - its really quick and easy (no soldering) - I tend to make 'em in batches and can make 60 in 60 minutes or so. That's a LOT quicker than you could do for 1/4" or 1/8" cables! Loads quicker, loads cheaper - hmmm, gotta love those bananas!

There are some solderless banana plugs on this page:

Ok, I got a bit of updating done (though its maybe still a bit sketchy...)

Just put details of a few things up on my electronics page:
http://bugbrand.co.uk/pages/electronics.htm
Including schems and front panel files

Here's the schem for the 4089 implementation::
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

Having investigated the outputs a little more, I figured why I was getting confused --- at audio rates you do hear the output as binary divisions (octaves) (and this can be great because you can turn off/on each sub-octave!), but at lower freqs you realise that things are a bit different to other binary dividers because of only getting a Hi pulse for one clock pulse (ie 1/16th of the sequence).. Umm, that's already sounding gobble-di-gooky!

-- basically, each division fits its pulse(s) within the spaces of the other divisions --- hmm, there's a pic on the datasheet
I don't know how to describe this!

YIPEEE~~~~!!!!!

this is exactly what i have been messing around with this week so i am so glad to get these schematics! great panel designs too. you are a serious diy guru.

i made a module this week where i took a big stripboard, and stuck a 4070, a 4020, and a 4040 all on the damn thing and then put every pin out to a jack. its on a 3wide frak panel and its so full of jacks!! but its been great!
