A great article. Thanks for posting this. Listenening to Varese when I was a young music student really changed my entire viewpoint. I think it did for a lot of people.

I heard about Varese thanks to Frank Zappa as I heard about Bartok thanks to Cecil Taylor (the free jazz piano player)
Sometimes knowledge follow strange paths

I agree--nice article. FZ also turned me on to Varese as well. (The present-day composer refuses to die!) Read Varese's biography in music theory class (high school), and played Poeme Electronique as part of my oral presentation. Somewhere I might still have a copy of a Commonweal article where Varese talked about music as Organised Sound. Haven't seen that one in decades, but I recall seeing the Stereo Review magazine with Zappa's account of connecting with Varese. Its here somewhere!!! (Possibly with my copy of which ever magazine it was where Zappa talks about the synclavier--was that Guitar Player?

I also still have the Columbia LP with Poeme Electronic (plus other radical tunes) I probably bought in 1969. If only I had a record player that worked, I'd give it a listen for old time's sake.
