Laughing

I laughed when I saw it was Jake Mandell (Who imo made exceedingly shit (well very dull 'wallpaper electronica') max/msp music anyway Laughing ). Then after not really understanding the question until the flash site got cross with me initially gave me a score of 72%, so I decided to take it again, and during this time I must say that my daughter was trying to take and eat a banana from the fruit bowl in front of me, I scored a measly 61% Shocked

Yes Jake. Rolling Eyes Laughing

94.4% Correct!
Seemed like a lot of them were a bit easy. Obviously was a note that wasn't in the first one.

It's an A/V programming language for Mac and now Windows.

It's good- but very deep. But a lot of music I've heard from it can have a tendency to sound 'samey', probably because most who use it are Aphex Twin or Autechre wannabies!! Sorry guys- but it's true isn't it?? Shocked Wink Laughing Embarassed

I don't think that Richard Thomas uses Max/MSP, he may use Audiomulch (Andrew, you gotta check out Audiomulch! Very Happy ), but whatever Mr Thomas uses, he don't half make bloody fabulous electro-glitch jazz!!

"Soggy Martyrs" comes highly recommended from me!

max/MSP is a biggie in the academic world and none of them is an Aphex Twin or Autechre wannabies!

I got "88.9% Correct". I also took this test once back in 2006 and got 86.1% back then.

When taking the test I thought I was going to do worse.

I thought the opposite, but I think these 'tests' are like MENSA tests. Either you can do them or you can't. I wonder what Beethoven would have thought about these? Rolling Eyes

On the previous one I scored really bad, this one was like "normal" at 75%. Most errors were things I flagged as different while they were not.

Interesting test. I got 66.7. Then tried a couple of more times and got 63.9 each time (using two different sets of earphones, so that didn't seem to make much difference). Tried one last time and got 69.4. I think I'll quit for now while I'm near normal Smile Might try it again when my allergies are less active.

I have some question as to whether the test is strictly a measure of tone deafness. I think memory and concentration are factors as well.

This test is a real drag. I got about 75% of the way though and my phone rang. I answered it. Went back to the test and hit the relaod button on the browser to get that last phrase to repeat and it jumped back to the beginning. Boo Evil or Very Mad

94.4% Very Happy It might have helped that a lot of the stuff that I get when playing with note algorithms end up sounding like the more pointless ones here.

Good point - I hadn't read it as closely as I should have. Now that I have, I noticed that it also says

excellent musicians rarely score above 80%.
So kudos to all of you who surpassed that lofty level. (and reassurance to the rest of us that we are in good company Smile)

Scratch that! I'm a shit musician and I scored 83.3, or did they mean to say excellent musicians rarely score over 80%, but shit musicians often do? Razz

Maybe, being an "excellent" musician has nothing to do with whether you're tone deaf or not. I know I'm not tone deaf, and the result I got tends to back that up, but do I regard myself as an excellent musician? No way! I'm barely interested in writing or performing music enough to justify the space it takes up in my life. I know some "excellent" musicians. The type of people who love writing and performing so much that they can't help themselves, they are doing it all the time. Some of them could be tone deaf for all I know, but their enthusiasm and commitment would easily make up for it, and probably render it irrelevant.
What is an "excellent" musician? Confused

70, but i started to lose focus about 2/3 through.

This reminds me of Gordon's Music Aptitude Tests.

http://www.sc.edu/library/music/gordon.html

I didn't do too well on those either. But then again, I took that test in a methods of music education class where the professor thought it would be appropriate to change the class into methods of music education research. These tests are supposed to test innate ability as opposed to years of training. One of the things Gordon would do to try and get around our Western trainings was to use bizarre temperments, symmetrical scales, and less often heard modes. This way, someone who has spent 6 years in the conservatory isn't going to be as easily able to process the examples into small bits.
