Wow! That's awesome. I will test out your design if you decide to layout the other parts of the schem.

But I really need to learn how to do this--how to lay out schems for PCB fab.
Theres another circuit that I've been wanting very much to try out, but one i think is too complicated for me to veroboard; a frequency to pitch converter designed by Moog Music for their theremin--buT probably useful to for all instruments: http://www.moogmusic.com/manuals/HotRodEtherwav.pdf

Thanks for that, on the schematic I drew beforehand it was on a different pole for some reason!!

Updated the post, it should now be more correct

the doepfer quantizer is PIC based.

just to be clear.. if i try this pcb, should it work? or is it missing sections (channels?) of the schematic?

i will be getting my chip in about a week from digikey so will most likely try this pcb artwork. if you have a newer version, i could try that instead. BUT BASICALLY I WILL BE YOUR GUINEA PIG

Nope , since I posted that I found a Lot of errors especially as I assumed the package was 0.6in wide rather than 0.3! ( although can you get it in both? )

I want to get this one really right so it may be a little while - im doing a little bit every day. I have decided since to make it 2 layer - but with via's so that you can still do one layer but with wires running over the board - only with a few power connections not the signal. This is mostly to keep things clean under the IC's. I have started the channels board - it should be that they are the same size and you can bolt them together. Im doing 2 boards because of the board size limit in eagle light - you could just etch them together

yes if you tried it out it would be useful - I have everything except the DAC , ill post the stairstep part up when I get home its finished

I'd be in for 2-4 of these if someone made a PCB.

Is anyone still interested in this now that the quantix-8 is around? I, for one have no use for a wavetable oscillator, but I need a bunch of bare-bones quantizers.

I'm with you guys. I really don't want to build such a complicated circuit, when I basically just want the quantizer. Also, I'd like a few of them. One or two for my sequencer, one for my wogglebug, etc.

However, I've recently discovered an option that I didn't previously know of. There is a quantizer built into the Blacet "Improbability Drive" module. The kit is $150 (which is still high, but much better that buying a doepfer quantizer for $250, and then putting it behind a new panel).

The quantizer on the Blacet has a switch for chromatic, major, minor and diminished. Plus the rest of the Improbability Drive looks pretty cool and useful. Similar to the Wogglebug or Buchla Source of Uncertainty. I'm leaning in this direction.

I have one. It works pretty good, but the scale is selected by a trimmer on the board. I plan on having this done from the panel.

He used a PIC, DAC0800 and a couple of op amps for it - pretty simple actually. You could petition John Blacet to produce a board with just his quantizer on it. Or at least the programmed PIC with a schematic. If there was enough interest, he might do it. Very Happy

I've actually considered both of these and I was leaning towards the doepfer because it is a dual quantizer.

I'll breadboard the DAC part as soon as Farnell has this expensive ic in stock...

I might still be interested. I already have the Doepfer one (far cheaper over here!) and have ordered the Quantix board. But I might well use the Quantix board as an 8-bit sampler most of the time.

Having played with the Doepfer, I'd say I prefer one with scales. The Doepfer quantizer has one chromatic quantizer and one scaled one and I hardly ever use the chromatic one.

I'l still hoping to find the ADC/DAC used in the Elektor one so I can build that as well.

i guess it's aimed for a totally different use.
this can't compete with, be compared with Quantix 8/other scale quantizers.

A scale quantizer allows to create melodies, arpeggios from any cv source.
This AD7245 module is just a "utility module" that steps your cv into well-tempred scale intervals. (to square S&H, sequencer cv output...)

THIS IS 10 VOLTS BI POLAR !!! Cool

(no need to attenuate, scale, etc all your cv signals before feeding it...a great value)

PS : btw, you write "quantizer" or "quantiser" ?

Google search : quantizer : 381 000 results
Google search : quantiser : 22 800 results

Yes, but with current availability and prices of the AD7245, it's very expensive as a utility module. Digikey is something like $50-60 shipping to Europe. Farnell has a minimum order of 50 euro and a 25 euro acquisition fee as they don't have it in stock.

So I'm very interested, but only if the availability of the AD7245 gets better. Being in Europe, a Quantix is actually cheaper at the moment!

arghh...
i've understood farnell waits for some ic to be stocked...
so, (i guess) with no additionnal charge.
i remember about free shipping for over 200€ order...

i've sent them a mail.

Quantix-8 is for me an amazing project, i'd never try to breadboard (any part of) it...
