Trackers? |
|
|
Can someone explain how to use a tracker like SoundTracker (Linux)? I can't figure out how to get ANY sound from it. I don't know how to load samples, where I would find / create instruments, etc. I'm totally lost. Can someone help me? |

Hey, just wanted to say I've been using trackers since the days of Scream Tracker, Fast Tracker, and Impulse Tracker, and they're primarily how I learned to compose electronic music.
I actually use what I would call a "present day" tracker as one of my main music composition tools. Same slick tracker interface and effects column format (and speedy efficiency, but with all the modern advances you'd expect, MIDI, VST, ASIO, etc.) It's called Renoise and you can get it from here: http://www.renoise.com. It's the best tracking software I've ever used, and is available on Windows, Mac OSX, and most recently Linux. It's a fully featured free tracker, except if you want to be able to render your song to audio files (such as bouncing to a 2 track wav), then there is a license fee (which in my opinion is incredibly reasonable, I happily registered in 2002 (although it was only $40 then), and I have not had to pay for an upgrade yet.
I haven't used it in a Linux environment, but there's a very active user community that I'm sure can help out. Beyond the Linux specifics, I can definitely explain the basics of how to use a tracker, and the theory behind them. Do you have an IM perhaps we can talk on, or another way to exchange conversations. It will probably be a lot better suited than posting giant rants on the forum; although that could be better for anyone else interested.
Anyways let me know, I'd be happy to try and help.

I have AIM, and I'd be glad if you could PM me if you'd like to chat there.
I have Renoise, but I don't have the money, and no ability to render to WAV or OGG is killing me using it. I also have GoatTracker, LSDJ (Gameboy), Schism Tracker, and SoundTracker (all for Linux, aside from LSDJ).
I'd love for you to help me out a bit.
Thanks,
Alex |

Yeah, I love Renoise. But I can't shell out the ~$90 that it costs for the full version (to render my songs). |

alternative for rendering your songs in the demo: use 'wiretap' or something similar. This piece of software records 'what you hear'.
Off coarse, simplest and fairest would be to buy renoise
By the way, i just discovered electro-music.com and certainly looks very nice. Big up! |
