I've run a first series of tests about the playing of most common formats, audio and video, by different apps :

Updated the page, corrected some errors, removed the SWF format, because it's not really video.
Added a zip with a collection of all formats involved in this test.
Planning to do the same play-test with multichannel formats, in my case the quad one.

Are you interested in reports about other players like Winamp and Foobar?

Both players are important ones too, although I don't use them.
So I could add such an information in the grid.
But still according to my rules for this :
If Winamp needs an original Real DLL to play a RA file, it doesn't count.
If, after installing a player, the search for e.g. the Real Alernative codec is needed, is a questionable case.
I selected players, that after install, doesn't need anything else to play a file-format in the first place.
I consider native plugins to support extra formats, like the XMPlay one for the FLA format, different from
going to QuickTime, to load some library, to be able to play MOV files.
Anyway, yes, I like to add such reports to the page.

Ok, I can't be 100% sure of players needing external plugins or helper DLLs, as I do have some commercial tools installed and I did experiment with various players some of which got deinstalled again.

That being said, I'll note down what I do remember having done to each player. Whenever I saw video I'll note that as a separate comment.

Quote:
-----------------

- For WinAmp (5.531) I did not install any addons I think, it plays :

afr2

dolpy0, but it does not show the track length (and no video).

dorodoro

glpro2, with video

harmonicz

laptopd, with video

Mesdag2

Mordon v3s

naritaya

nads20489 - Non2a

PT-B5

starthing 2c

station

wakeup - with video

-----------------------

- For Foobar2000 (0.9.5.3) I installed a monkey audio plugin (for ape files) and an ALAC plugin (for apple lossless audio (m4a)), both directly from the foobar website but not bundled, it then plays :

brbells1

dorodoro

naritaya

nads-20489-? Non2a

PT-B5

reabillity

starthing_2C

station

----------

- For GOM player (2.1.9.3754) I installed the Real Audio alternative, but that still does not work too well so I'll leave the rm file out. It plays :

dolphy0.flv, with video

glpro2.avi, with video

laptopd.mpg, with video

naritaya.wav

Non2ac.ogg

PT_B5.wma

station.mp3

wakup.wmv, with video (the cat vid is fun BTW)

The cat vid is fun indeed. I live with a cat myself and it's very recognizing..
Thanks a lot for your test reports.
I understand the problem with comparison if one bought some commercial tool, while I start from another perspective.

I will integrate the results on the page. Although I can't test FooBar2000, because it appears to be only for XP or later.
While I'm running W2K. But I think the app deserves a place.

Never heard of that GOM player. I will check it out.

I'm still a bit doubtful about adding Real Audio alternative or QuickTime alternative. It's not really part of the package..

My experiences with both QT alt. and real audio Alt. are not too good. QTA is just about tolerable on windows XP, on my Vista laptop it's useless (but I do have more audio trouble on this pc).

The real Alt. sort of works for GOM, but GOM doesn't seem to realize and it issues a message that it can't handle the contents & when you click that away it just plays the file.

On XP I have this other free player called "Zinf" which seems usable as well.

Foobar certainly deserves a place on your list it's a pretty good no-nonsens player with several nice features, it does CD ripping too I discovered the other day.

Same here. So I searched for other things,
Got a lot of reactions to this page, with a lot of useful information.
So it appears that some 'independent' players were using the basic 'mplayer' engine.
Like 'MPUI' or 'SMPlayer'. They are just a front end GUI based on the same thing.
Another notice : Some apps used 'ffdshow', a codec I guess.
About CD ripping :
JetAudio is capable as well to do that, and also has an excellent format-converter.
But converters should be tested in another page.

Upgraded this page.
And added a test about playing four channel audio tracks.
