Hi Guys,

I just had some strange stuff happen: while browsing with safari a load of finder windows appeared and then disappeared, this has worried me slightly!

Is there a decent virus checker available for OS X?

Cheers

Andy

Start with ClamXav 'cause it's free. Google also shows offerings from McAfee and Norton. I have no idea how good they are. Norton's mac offerings were pretty bad for awhile so I wrote them off and haven't looked to see if they've improved at all. So I guess my tendency would be to look to McAfee first for a commercial product... but check reviews first before doing anything.

For a counter perspective... http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060511065134478

Hi James,

I would not trust McAfee or Norton anywhere near a computer of mine thats for sure.

One of the places I did some work for used McAfee the time it took to build the system (loads of c++ code) went from 2 hours down to 45 minutes after we managed to deinstall it from one of the machines for a test, and it was harder to get rid of than any virus I had ever met!

I have ClamXav which seems ok to test the odd file, but any virus checker that complains if you ask it to scan the whole disk is a bit strange in my eyes.

Really I want Nod32, but basically I suppose I just have to wait till the virus checker people start writing loads of viruses for the Mac in order to sell their products on a new platform.

I think Avast makes a checker for the Mac too?

For PC I like the tool, and for personal use it's free then.
