As much as I love my new-ish Opteron server, a lot of important software just isn't ready for 64-bit systems. I installed Studio 64 a few months ago, hoping to run OpenMusic, PD, and Supercollider - but they all have issues compiling for 64 bits. So this box has languished a bit. This week I started playing with it a bit am starting to like it a lot.
Anyway, for out-of-the-box use, Pure:Dyne is by far my fave distro so far. It is lean, well thought out, stable. I tried a version 2 build in the sprintime and loved it. I thought about nesting it on my HD, but since they said that v3 was due out shortly, I decided to wait. Version 3 was released in June and I was just trying to install it. There are a few things broken now which will likely be fixed soon, but it rocks. This is going to be set up on my wife's AMD 2200+ box, with its crappy mobo.
Previous versions of puredyne were based on Dyne:Bolic, but the new version is based on a minimal install of Debian Lenny, without the Gnome graphical desktop environment. It should work fine with Gnome also, if this isn't too "bloated" for you. Older machines probably prefer the leaner install. Installing over the net is a small problem right now, as somebody at Debian Multimedia distro decided to rename a few packages, so PD is broken. I suspect this will be fixed shortly, and Miso will work off the bat. |
