Subject description: Are there any book written on plug-in development (VST or AU)?

Are there any books published on how to get started in audio plug-in development (either VST or Apple AU)?

Are there any good IDEs available for plug-in development, either commercial or free?

I'm interested in playing around with developing a plug-in but don't know how to get started.

I know that some of the fellas on this forum use this.

http://www.synthedit.com/

Mosc has just developed an experimental ambiophonic processor plug in using this development system.

Hope this helps !

I have seen that book, but it looks like SynthEdit is only for Windows and I use Mac. Thanks, anyway.

If you are after AU/VST dev on a mac, XCode is a free development environment with everything you need for AU development. It is on your install DVD or you can download the latest version from apple.

There are examples of hosting and writing AU components and plenty of documentation included.

On the pc you can go for Visual c++ express edition from Microsoft, I am pretty sure this is free.

For the vst sdk, register with Steinberg as a developer and download it. It also contains samples and documentation.

Or you could use something like juice http://www.rawmaterialsoftware.com/juce/ which is a cross platform au/vst and a lot more sdk.

Whatever you do be ready for a steep learning curve.

Cheers

Andy

There's also a SynthEdit-like program for OS X called SonicBirth.
