Hi Linux Guys,
I have just ordered one of these to take on my travels as basically a word processor/email/web/photo storage machine.
Now I quite fancy having some music software installed to play with, especially supercollider.
From what I can see the easiest dist to load up is Mandriva but it looks like you can get some of the others working.
What is a recommended dist for supercollider and any other nice music apps I might want? Would Mandrive work?
Cheers

I have all that stuff running on Ubuntu Studio. Have you looked into that? _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Thanks for the pointer.
Just had a little look and it looks like the RTKernel doesn't work out of the box on the eee pc.
There is a version eeeXubuntu http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home?s=eeexubuntu maybe I will try that.
Any recommendations for good free or cheap apps to stick on it?
Cheers

well in the free as in freedom (and beer) category, here's a few you could use:
- Ardour
- Audacity
- BEAST
- GNU Denomo
- Hexter
- Hydrogen
- MusE
- MuseScore
- PureData
- QSynth
- Rosegarden
- Seq24
- SooperLooper
- Sound Recorder
- ZynAddSubFX
Consider which sound system(s) you want, ALSA, OSS, JACK. There are utilities you would use with those such as mixers and patchers too. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I just discovered the EEE machines a couple of weeks ago. These new Atom powered ones interest me. The battery life of these things is a real bonus for hardcore users. My current laptop burns my legs and runs out of power in 2.5 hours, even if I am just reading text on it. Music work or anything else involved means that I need to plug it in... which for me defeats the purpose of having a laptop. These little EEEs seem to offer well thought out features.
I can't afford now, but I might get one later in the year. I could see Pure:Dyne going on there. |

Yep they look pretty neat.
I am taking a year off and going on some travels so wanted a small and light notebook with a solid state disk to take with me, they seemed the ideal choice and amazing value really.
I will keep you updated, should be arriving in the next hour. |

If you truly bricked it (no boot record working), just try using a Knoppix LiveCD, or the Ubuntu LiveCD. From there, you can fdisk the drive, and restart. |

Booting was ok, got it back using the linux recovery disk it came with after a bit of arseing around getting it onto a usb stick.
Also managed to partially get Ubuntu on, apart from lots of the hardware not working.
The problem is these 1000 machines are new and all the Linux geeks haven't sorted out getting everything working yet.
Linux sysadmin is definitely not my strong point.
Off to try to build the network drivers now. I can see myself giving up and paying Microsoft for yet another copy of XP though. Bugger. |

You might try going back to the original OS and trying to see if their distro has any of the music apps in package form.
I'll go read up on their website and see what all is involved. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Ok got the HD back, hooray.
Ubuntu seems to be working pretty well now, better than the default dist in fact!
Installing supercollider now.....

Bob, did you ever go back to Linux, now that 6 months have passed, and eeePC's are almost ubiquitous? |

Nope, It is still running XP.
It is a good little machine, I took it around Asia in a rucksack, it got bashed around a fair bit and kept working fine. Battery life is very good around 6 to 7 hours. The only real problem is that the solid state disks are slow for writing. |
