I had never been to the Renaissance Center and it was way better than I expected. Everything was clean and modern and really nice, the acoustics in both concert rooms were just fantastic.

The theatre was enormous and had a cool balcony that no one but myself seemed to know about. I was able to go sit by myself up there in the perfect sweet spot for the MAP Ambisonic system, and really get a feel for what it did. It really is a good system for live performance, adding a lovely lush sense of ambience that makes the performance seem more orchestral. It did depend a bit on the source material and was sensitive to off-center for the perfect result, but even off-center, it still made things sound wider and more lush. I thought it did the best with the acoustic material where it sounded completely vast. Some of the faster and electronic sources were already moving around the sound field so it wasn't as obvious to me in those situations.

The center also had really nice bathrooms, drinking fountains with good tasting water, and a cool inner atrium that spanned multiple stories. There was enough parking for the festival and it wasn't difficult to get equipment in. Nice hardwood floors everywhere too, and the whole building's exterior surfaces, including the inner atrium if I remember right, was pretty.

Every room had tons of electrical plugs.

Downsides were I wish there was a hotel across the street, and the demo/seminar room had air conditioning that kept turning on and could not be disabled from the thermostat on the wall.

I'm OK with the rumors where I heard next year's event may be, which has a more accessible airport, but the Renaissance Center is an excellent venue for this sort of event, it was like it had the completely perfect configuration of acoustically crisp rooms.

Arrived back home in the ATL this afternoon, just under a 5 hour drive from Kingsport.

Many thanks to all who attended my performance Friday night either in person or on the stream. And your CD purchases were greatly appreciated (especially the long distance one by Mr M in NY).

I had a blast all weekend and greatly enjoyed all the performances, seminars, and conversations. The jam with James and Jeannie was sweet.

Howard and Greg did a great job (again), and folks like Kevin, Dale, Howard's family, and all the volunteers did a thousand things well to make it flow so smoothly.

Hey everyone!

We just got home (WV) and unpacked, I77 North was closed just above Wytheville for several hours due to an bad accident in the tunnel. Good vibes are in order for the unfortunate folks involved.

At any rate, we had an amazing weekend. The performances were mind-blowing, the jams were a huge rush, and the community - wow! - what a fantastic bunch of people. I had the sense from the board that this was a group of very cool people, and that suspicion was confirmed and this weekend. I'm full of ideas and energy, and it's gonna take me a week to process everything.

Big thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, especially Greg for giving us the opportunity to perform, and Kevin for providing the amazing sound system!

Hope to see you all next year (if not sooner)!

Peace,
Patrick (of O.V.O.)

Hey thar everone
Just wanted to crackle in .
Just got home. What a grueling journey home.
And I was not the driver!
Any whoo,
I must say my experiences at EM-08 are still with me.
I could not stop thinking about em the whole 555 miles to my home.
I tried to involve myself in as much as I could .
I hope that my enthusiasm and high energy did not FREAK OUT anyone.
Being my 4th attendance at The Conference and Festival and my first out of my area.(I live approximately 5 miles from the Cheltenham Arts Center).
This reply could be a book!
I sincerely would like to thank Greg ,Howard ,Geneveve Hong,Howards' brother and his lovely wife,Kevin and Eric Kissinger,James Lacey and his wife,Whose name I can never remember,
Jim Combs and his family, Kip Rosser,- (you had better get in touch Theraman),BEF and Steve ,Destroyifier ( I hope you and Dan got back okay) and and all of everybody from the local fans to the Tennessee Line dancers.(I swear they were a planned part of the project ruori set.?)
Robert Grabowski, Bill Fox, the list goes on.
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
This is sounding sort of mushy, maybe it's road fatigue.
Anyone who wishes to contact me do so ,because I find hard to make the first approach.
Again thank you ALL
love and electrons.

Michael Peck and I have done it three times, it gets easier the second time. By the third time, the car knows the way.

The Tennessee Line Dancers have put out a restraining order on you.

I had a wonderful weekend at the EM-08. I would like to thank everyone for being so nice and helpful. Words alone can not express the feelings I walked away with. I'm inspired and I'm working on new material.

Thank you so very much.

I was one of those who was there in spirit only, but, I listened to the stream almost the entire time.

Wonderful music! What more can I say? Some of the wonderful excitement that is always generated at the E-M festivals came through the stream, but... there is nothing like being there in person. Maybe next year.

A word about improving the stream experience. Please keep the mikes connected so we listeners can hear any comments the performers make, and also hear the audience reactions. Also - !!! It would be good if some canned music was played during the breaks so that we know that the stream is still up and not down. Announcer comments or artist/performer interviews are best, and if I can make it next year, I'll volunteer to do that. But seriously guys, if we record the music, think how much more valuable it would be if the artist/performers comments were part of the archives too.

(working on your kalimba controller), camping buddies Destroyifier and Dan in their dangermobile, the infuriatingly great Mike Peck (You GO, Boy!), visualist par excellance Bef and Steve, Spudzzz (Devo Uber Alles) Theremin Buddie Kip, Per and so many others that If I dont get you, complain loudly to me Smile

Thanks to Mike for suggesting I come and doing most of the drive down.
I hope to see and hear you all at the next one, wherever!

You got that right! Per covered White Room sound for Jeremy so he could bring his bass to that amazing Noise Jam, and I was running back and forth in the hallway so I could give a blow-by-blow Chat Room description of the Noise Proceedings to the listeners on the stream. Nicely done!

I too had a wonderful time this past weekend and once again left inspired and overwhelmed. It was great seeing the familiar faces and to meet new friends.
Special thanks to Kevin for hauling his gear in and providing the best sound yet! Also to Howard, Greg, Hong and Genevieve for keeping everything smoothe and graceful. Also to all the volunteers for busting their asses to lend a hand when asked or needed!
Quick Highlights:
Drachemusic-You rule!

Kevin Spears-I'm speechless

Rock and M. Vic-thanks for the support!

The Boys from Memphis-Can't wait to see you again.

Kip-Always inspiring

Howard and Mark-That set was tons of fun!

There's a ton more of course, but the bottom line is WE ALL MADE THIS EVENT special in one way or another. Until next year, stay active, stay busy and stay in touch. mdp

I had a super-great time. I went to EM '08 without knowing a single person there, and I must say, I had an extremely warm welcome. The demonstrations/lectures were informative and valuable, the concerts were great, and the jamming was fun too. Every music lover here has carved their own particular niche, and it's great to see everyone open and accepting of everyone else. It's neat that I didn't feel separated by age, race, religion, political ideals, or even by preferred music genre. Also, the event organization was very professional, but without loosing it's awesome informal vibe. I'm definitely looking forward to next year.
