if you're absolutely starting from 0, try this:

http://www.fluxmonkey.com/electronoize/40106Oscillator.htm

for a very simple intro to using the 40104 as an lunetta-style oscillator.

Well, I'm not starting completely from scratch.. I've build oscillators from 4093 and 40106 before.. But very simple stuff..

Hi Silas,
I guess most of us are just learning about making sound with logic. I don't know much about it, except for what I've read here, built or thought about. Mostly, just do it.

There are several good circuits listed in this Forum - take a look at some of the other topics and just start building.

The 40106 is at the heart of my Lunetta. I use it for oscillators, LFO's and clocks. Bugs schematic listed in this forum works well.

I use the 555 as a voltage controlled oscillator with very good results.

I use the 386 in my Lunetta's outboard audio amplifier. (Google search for the "Ruby" amp.)

The OpAmps can be used for mixers or an R/2R Ladder

The 4011 makes a Ring Modulator.

The 4017 can make a sub-oscillator...

I've got all these in my Lunetta - You've got all kinds of raw material there!

I would suggest you start breadboarding your logic and take the in's and out's to the front panel. Power them up and start plugging things together. It makes a lot more sense once you start.

So I'm thinking;

Using 2 * 4017 to make a 20 step CV sequencer.
4011 for Ring mod.
40106 for oscillators.
4018 for signal generator.

hmmmm.....

Hey Silas,

In the little experience I have with my Lunetta, I don't think a 4017 sequencer would be high on my list of things to add.

I think it would be boring compared to what I can get currently.
Using variations of logic you can get a very complex repeating pattern of sounds going.

Maybe use the 4017 as a clock divider or sub-oscillator...
that and the CD4051, 4040, 4053...some clocks, R/2R ladder and a couple 40106 or 555 oscillators .... oooh!

Now we're talkin 'Lunetta' instead of a low budget one pony sequenced noise making oscillator.
(did I say that out loud?) Shocked

Just my two cents. I'm sure the sequencer would be fun, too.

i'd agree... altho many of the circuits we've been tossing around "approximate" more traditional modules like oscillators (and nothing wrong with using them as such), they're pretty limited if you approach them in only that way, and can (have) led to frustration due to unrealistic expectations.

if you want an expo-control sine oscillator, build one of terry michaels'. better to let a lunetta be a lunetta.

hello bbob, where would it be possible to find such oscillators by terry michaels?

btw thanks for the CMOS 'lessons' on fluxmonkey even if I have collin's book i found them really helpful

http://home.att.net/~synthsource/ens76/vco1.htm

many many folks, commercial & diy, have based their VCO designs on this...
