Due to some big fights and the way it leaves the cap off the toothpaste, my marriage to Logic Pro/Studio is coming to a tearful finale.

So...

Which DAW would you recommend? Ideally, I'd like something with the tight timing of Renoise but a more advanced, less UMI-2B musical interface (and yep, I realise that slick interfaces eat timing). I'm actually trialling Reaper and I'm very impressed, particularly for the price.

Beyond that? Digital Performer 6? Umm... I don't even know what the Steinberg stuff for OSX is called now, last time I used Cubase was 1997. Really, I've used Logic for so long now, I've lost touch completely with the rest of the Mac DAW world.

Or is it a foolish quest, will all of them annoy me equally in different ways? Should I just return to Logic with a bunch of flowers and hope none of our friends bring up the whole messy business when they next see us?

Did you run the latest updates? Supposedly the Airport bug that would affect Logic Studio has been eliminated.

Yep! I hadn't had that bug myself. I've had the 'can't find any of the EXS files you found fine yesterday' and a couple of other lovelies but it's more that the whole shebang now annoys me too much.

Hell, I may just switch back to my DPS24 and leave the DAW closed behind me... Razz

Hmmm... I was sure a few DP users would come out of the woodwork? Perhaps they're all too happy to try and convert people?

I'm off to have a look at the Steinberg site. Something I thought I'd never say! Embarassed

Well I moved away from cubase to Logic, I have no inkling to go back.

I think you use a Mac don't you, the mac performance in cubase was terrible for me with low buffer sizes and I mean really terrible http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/topic-57357.html&highlight=

Yep, 8-core Mac Pro.

You know, I almost went with Pro Tools a few years ago, when I could have thrown round £15K+ without embarking on a ramraiding spree to fund it. But I didn't because I was very happy with Logic. Cool

I'm more curious about Digital Performer... I think I'll start a new topic to see if I can un-earth users. Very Happy

I've been a long time Cubase user (since Atari version 2.0 anyway), this was a brilliant program in it's day, it had basically every MIDI feature you could think of, including Midi Managers (system exclusive maps) for nearly all my MIDI gear, so realtime manipulation was a cinch! One of the best features in any software.

When Steinberg bought out SX1, I was disheartened to find they had omitted sysex from the package, I posted a thread on their forum about it, and after 1,000 replies from disgruntled customers, there was still no word from the Steinberg team. I later heard that Sysex had been re-introduced in SX3, so I thought I'd wait until v4 was released before making a purchase.

In the meantime I got acquainted with a Mac and Ableton, then later bought logic. Sometime later I managed to get hold of a cheap version of Cubase 4, but I was disheartened once again that the sys-ex was hardly worth raising an eyebrow at! I sold it and stuck with Logic, which is what I'm running to this day.

I think it's possibly a case of thinking the grass may be greener elsewhere, but jumping ship may not be the best option, Cubase is a big step backwards in my humble opinion. Master logic, it's a really powerful tool, and has a heap of great features! If you really must, I would recommend Ableton as a close second.
