WOW!!!!
Quote:
The conventional approach to increasing the processing power of native systems requires you to invest in costly, dedicated processors built onto expansion cards or into external hardware. Now, with Logic Pro 7, you can work with up to 128 stereo audio streams simply by using Macs over Ethernet. Logic distributed audio processing scales from single composition to full-blown audio post-production needs.

There’s no need to open your computer, as you don’t need to add an expansion card, and by it’s very nature, this feature provides immediate access to the latest processor technology. Simply add one or more Macintosh systems via Ethernet (or FireWire) connections to your Logic Pro 7 system. The result is an audio and music production system with processing power that was previously unimaginable for native-based systems.

Of course (if you mean the Xserve G5).
We tested with many computer models, including Xserves.
With G4 computers - well, it probably works, but we don't recommend it.

I think that in order to take advantage of it you need very fast computers (not lousy G4 DP500MHz if you know what I mean)

I have checked out the product blurb in detail. My god, this is one insane product! Hidden in Logic 7 is a high end DAW enviroment that is truly awesome. And it can be scaled to handle almost any task.
The distributed processsing enviroment will sell Logic to the film industry in a big way. Awesome.
However, the network for the disitributed processing is gigabit:

Quote:
A distributed audio network requires at least two Apple computers running Mac OS X version 10.3 or later, with one acting as a master system (1GHz G4 or faster recommended) and additional computers serving as “nodes” (G5 recommended). Logic node software uses each networked computer as an additional processor for your Logic Pro 7 system. You may install Logic Node on an unlimited number of Macs. Gigabit Ethernet provides the best performance. If you use more than one node, the switch that manages them must be Gigabit to avoid data transfer bottlenecks.

This is cool, you must have a lot of money in order to consider this anyway.

The only thing I still dislike is the futuristic look of many of the plugins.. I hate them. They are so damned ugly.

But...

This one seems promising:
http://www.apple.com/logic/sculpture.html

Quote:
Sculpture offers an inexhaustible variety of naturalistic sounds, based on component modeling technology, seamlessly integrated into the Logic Pro 7 software. It includes many sounds sought-after by composers, such as string, flute and pad sounds. Sharp percussive sounds, such as xylophones for example, are easily created. Given this broad scope for sound creation, Sculpture proves itself a worthwhile resource for unconventional sound design as well.

Have you heard about AU plug-ins validation?
at start up Logic 7 will inform you if any of the loaded plug-ins does not comply with Apple AU standards. it will work anyway but you use it at your own risk Exclamation

Orren Merton wrote:
WHAT IS AU VALIDATION?
In 2003, Apple Computer developed an "AU Validator Tool," (AUVal for
short) that checks a number of parameters, reporting mechanisms, and so
on, both to make sure that an AU follows the specifications, and to
test a bit for instability._ This tool can be freely downloaded by
developers (and anyone else from Apple Computer's Website:
http://developer.apple.com/softwarelicensing/agreements/audio.html

WHY DO WE NEED AU VALIDATION?
Any software that "plugs-in" to another piece of software can crash it.
_ It's that simple._ It is in the interest of all host software to be as
stable as possible._ From a USER point of view--there is nothing more
frustrating than your sequencer crashing._ From a HOST DEVELOPER point
of view--there is nothing more frustrating than being blamed by the
user for a crash caused by a third-party plug-in that the host
developer cannot fix._ Scanning third-party plug-ins is one of the few
resources developers have to ensure that a third-party plug-in will
properly follow the spec, which should reduce the instances of plug-ins
crashing the host.

IF AUVAL HAS BEEN AROUND SO LONG, WHY DOESN'T EVERYTHING PASS?
At the time AUVal was first posted, Apple required companies to pass
this test ONLY in order to use the official Apple Audio Units logo._
Many plug-in developers simply chose not to use the Audio Units logo
(the normal "Mac OSX" logo did not have this requirement)._
Also--between the 2003 version of AUVal and the current version that
Logic uses, there were some changes._ If developers did not keep up to
date, its very possible their plug-in passes an early version, not a
later version.

WHAT DOES AU VALIDATION DO?
It scans the AU and tests parameters, outputs, version numbers, and so
on._ It then spits out a long list of test results, including what
passed and what didn't, to help developers identify and fix any errors
._ It does NOT test the plug-in interface at all._ What does this mean?
_ It means that sometimes, a plug-in will fail for a very trivial
reason, such as the version number is mismatched, and sometimes a
passing plug-in will still have a GUI bug-in that will crash it._ But
so far, AUVal is the best change we've got to ensure that plug-ins are
stable.

BUT THE PLUG-IN DOESN'T CRASH LOGIC 6!_ WHY DOES IT FAIL AU VALIDATION?
First of all, some instabilities are quite insidious._ One plug-in may
not crash, but it may destabilize your system so much that the NEXT
plug-in you use will crash._ You'd never know it was the original
plug-in that had the error, if you didn't know what to look for.

Also,_ Logic 6 contained a number of code hacks and out of spec AU
hosting in order to get it up and running with as many AUs as fast as
possible._ Many developers ended up with out of spec code that worked
in Logic._ In order to make Logic Pro 7 as stable as possible, a fair
amount of that code has been removed._ This means that some of those
plug-ins that were out of spec--even if they were originally out of
spec to work within Logic 6--will destabilize Logic 7._ But other
plug-ins that fail AUVal and work in Logic 6 _WILL_ work in Logic 7._
As stated above, sometimes a "fail" can be for very trivial reasons.

HOW COULD EMAGIC SPRING THIS SURPRISE ON DEVELOPERS?
Emagic_ contacted 3rd party developers a couple of months before the
release of Logic 7.__ Emagic offered both technical assistance and
developers versions of the software.__ Moreover, the Emagic beta team
was also in contact with these plug-in developers to update their
software months before release.

CAN I USE THE LOGIC AU MANAGER TO ENABLE PLUG-INS THAT FAIL?
Yes._ First, Launch the Logic AU Manager._ Then put a check in the box
next to the plug-in._ The next time Logic launches, it will give you a
message that you are using AU plug-ins that failed AUVal and might
de-stabilize your system._ Just click ok and you're good to go.

SHOULD I ENABLE PLUG-INS THAT FAIL?
That depends._ As above, some fail for trivial reasons and will not
adversely affect Logic at all._ But other plug-ins are out of spec, or
rely on out of spec Logic code that was removed._ Enabling those might
cause serious issues._ As a general rule, if AU Manager says a plug-in
"failed validation" it might be safe to re-enable._ If AU Manager says
a plug-in "crashed validation" its error might be more serious.__ My
personal opinion is if you can live without a plug-in that didn't pass,
leave it off until the developer updates the plug-in._ If you need it,
enable it, but be on the lookout for instability.

MY FAVORITE PLUG-IN FAILS AU VALIDATION!_ WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP FIX IT?
There is no point in writing nasty letters to Apple Computer, or to
plug-in developers._ Everyone is simply trying to do their job._ Even
though they probably have this information already, if you want to give
developers some helpful information, here's how:
1) Launch the Logic AU Manager
2) Click the "Rescan" button for the failing/crashing AU._ A window
with the AUVal results opens.
3) Copy the information from that window.
4) Write a SHORT, POLITE, and CONCISE email to the tech support of the
plug-in developer explaining the problem, and paste the AUval result
text into your email.
5) Send the email to tech support.

LIST OF PLUG-INS THAT PASS AU VALIDATION:
These plug-ins are known to pass Logic's AU Scan._ If you have one of
these plug-ins and it does not pass, please check the developer's
Website for the update that will pass.
Updated October 7th, 2004 (please post any other passing plug-ins to
the LUG; they will be added to this post).
