VCA Led question |
|
|
Hi:
I´m planning to use all water clear Leds in my modular synth (mostly blue
and violet), just a question of ashtetics.
The Yusynth VCA has a Led indicator (green), and is labeled as Level.
Is this Led a clip indicator like the ones in mixers channel strips, or simply
glows brighter with higher audio levels?
If I use a blue o violet Led instead the green one, will change the behaviour of
the indicator? (I know different Leds have different voltage drops, and
current consumption).
Thank you. _________________ Sebo

Hi
It's an input level indicator, the higher the input, the brighter the LED.
Yes you'll have to increase the value of R25 in order to reduce the brightness and power consumption (1.5K seems to be a good choice but you may try other values).

Thank you Yves!!!
I will try increasing R25, and will try to increase the values of resistors in
other modules (LFOs, ADSR, etc). _________________ Sebo

Hi Yves:
I changed R25 to 1K5 and the LED (red - crystal clear) was very bright,
I changed the resistor to 2K and still very bright, then I changed to 3K3,
and start to like it, is a little bright yet, but for now I will let it that way.
There's no big difference in brightness between the 1K5 and the 3K3.
One thing I noted is if a slowly turn up the input level, the LED turns on
when I reach 6.5 on the pot. And works exactly the same with the 3 resistors.
Is not a problem for me, just letting you know.
Also I was concerned about current consumption. I measured 6.1 mA at
the +15 with no signal present (LED turned off), and 7.9 mA with maximum
signal (LED full glowing).
So the LED are consuming only 1.8 mA.
That's less that you stated in your site.
Also I measured the current consumption of the VCO, was 27.7 mA at
the positive rail (I don't care measuring the negative in both cases, as
is supposed to be less current).
I didn't calibrated the VCAs or VCOs, may be in next days. _________________ Sebo

Thanks Sebo for these information.
I my case I did not use red crystal but plain standard LEDs and there are definitly differences in current vs brightness between a "normal" and a crystal LED. The lower the current the better for a modular
For the VCO, I measured the same current as you did and the current on the positive and negtive rails are nearly the same.
In fact I have a spreadsheet of the current draw of each yusynth modules and I will soon make it available on my site.
